I really want a S&W 3" 44 mag... but they seem impossible to find. Lew Horton Specials are extremely pricey....

I'm considering buying a S&W Mountain Gun and have it cut down and have action work done on it.

Who would you choose to do this work?

Maybe Mag-Na-Port, since they do similar work....

If you are going to cut it down then I would use a regular 629 and not a Mountain Gun, but its really splitting hairs. I can't remember which, but a 4" MG is only 1/2-1 oz difference in weight (lighter than 4" 629) so it would really only be what look you wanted the barrel to have.

I think I recall Don Williams doing an amazing Mod 29 a few years ago. You might talk to him first.

Fixed or adjustable sights?

There is a 3" fixed-sighted 629 NIB sitting in a local shop.

Here's a link t an older post on this forum, done by Alex Hamilton at ten Ring Precision:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6215&hilit=45+colt

There was a nice S&W model 25 on here a couple of years ago that had been shortened by don Williams, but I cannot find it now using the search function! Don..do you still recall the one I am talking about? It had been a 4 or longer inch barrell, and you cut it down to a shorty for a retired law enforcement officer for a carry gun??--John

John, That was originally a 6" 25-5 in nickel that I cut down to 3 1/2 - 4". Here's a couple of pics from my file.

Called them today. They couldn't find it!

They have one 629 with a 2.5" barrel, the "Survival".

And another with a 3" barrel but couldn't find it anywhere. They gave me the SKU but I can't find anything on the internet to match it.

Are 629's Round butt or Square butt?

Most are round butt. I will be going up there on Thursday and I'll look.

Randy Lee of Apex Tactical could do it. I had him work on a snub 25-2, and he was a pleasure to deal with.

While none of the work he's done for me has been on a revolver, I can say with confidence that you can't go wrong with Don Williams- an excellent craftsman, and a true gentleman as well.

I suggest Mag-na-Port. I just got a 4" SP101 .22 cut to 3" and a custom front sight- outstanding work!

OOPS...see the post regarding cutting a barrel down...

another option call S&W or Brownells, once upon a time Brownells had some odd barrels in from S&W and they were quite affordable. i had a 6 inch 29 rebarreled to a 4 inch lug style using a brownells bought S&W factory barrel. I think I Paid 130 for the barrel, and another 150 or so to have the new one fitted.

Here is a link to a 4 inch 629 barrel, http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ ... 4925#34925

Not sure what else they have in stock, but they sure are nice to talk to..

If you'd like fixed sights, why not get the Performance Center 3 inch 629?

There's one on GunsAmerica for $850 slightly used. I would think that would be pretty competitive price wise when compared to finding a good used 629 Mountain Gun and havng it cut down. Just tryin' to help :D

There's a 629 PC carry comp on Gunbroker, too. The only bad thing about them is they have that dang lock, which is unacceptable for me on a gun I might carry. Midway also carries/can get Smith barrels, if you don't want to have one cut.

You might check with Mark at Gemini Custom and see if he can hook you up with something. His Ruger SP101 work is quite exciting.

Here is a non-Horton 3" 29-4 and 3" 629-4 Backpacker (w/ C&S sights) from the early 90s:

Image

This is the same model as the above 29-4 but it went to see Jack Weigand in 2000 for a "Tame the Beast" package:

Mark is doing work very similar to what Jack did on mine.

I like Mag-na-port for revolver work- this is a 4" cut to 3" with a Mag-na-Port modified, Bowen blank front sight- it is a .22 l.r., too!
