I,m a leather worker renewing my love for busy hands . I would like to begin learning hand checkering for front strap on my first colt.would some one recommend starting point . I've been a craftsmen in one or more trades all my life and value fine craftsmenship.

Best I can recommend is get a few tools from Brownell's and dig in, maybe start on some mainspring housings or just 3/4' round stock.. I saw somebody's time lapse movie the other day of checkering a 1911 front strap, thought it was kinda cool:

I practiced on worn-out 20 gauge shotgun barrels.

Just don't start learning on a real gun.
