Curiosity has me asking a question that I have always wondered about. In a 1911 with no passive firing pin safety has there ever been a recorded instance of a complete sear failure(breakage) that allowed the hammer to fall and the gun to discharge?

I have on my shelf of failures, oddities and etc. a 1911 sear that had the tip break off. It's been there awhile and I don't remember the details of it, but it obviously can happen, and if Murphy is around when it happens, well............ First one I've seen tho' in many years of 'smiffin.

Could you tell if enough was missing to bypass the hammer's safety intercept notch? Thats what has me so curious. By the way, thanks for the time guys.

Al, The whole tip broke off, so yes, in this case it was incapable of anything other than filling space.

I sold a decent no-name custom gun to a friend of mine a few years back and after a while it developed hammer follow. My buddy didn't care-He just dropped the slide until the hammer falling to half cock eventually just broke the sear in half.
New sear and all was well.

Thanks for the time guys. Its just one of those things that stuck in my feeble brain. I never gave it a thought until the Series 80 Colts came out and the 1911 owners started crying fowl. Then I just thought Hmmm.
