I have a hard chrome 1911 and wondered if it would be possible to 'do it yourself' on the slide flats only.. or real foolhardy?

The best you can hope for is a polished, pebbly finish.

hard chrome is a super-flat layer,l laid down on the surface 9called the substrate) If the substrate is rough, the hard chrome will be rough, and polishing the hc (if you even can) will only cause you to break through the high sports.

Polishing is, at its essence, removing the high spots of the material, and creating a smooth surface. You aren't going to be removing any hard chrome with simichrome or something like that.

If you want a polished hard chrome finish you need to start with bare metal, give that metal a high polish and have the hard chrome applied.
