Howdy

How does a 4 inch 625 in 45acp compare to a 4 inch 686 in 357mag in recoil?

Is there a dramatic difference in accuracy?

Thanx

I've never owned a 4" 686, but I've had a 6" version. Recoil was minimal with full house .357 loads. I used it to shoot bowling pin and USPSA in the old days.
A few years ago, I picked up a 645 Mountain Gun in .45acp for IDPA/SSR division. With full load ball ammo, it was very comfortable to shoot. With my handload (read:gamer load) match ammo, it was a pussy cat.
Not able to compare side by side, I still think the 645 recoiled less.
As far as accuracy, all things being equal, there's no difference. Beside, skill is a major factor in accuracy. An instructor told me once, "Your skill is your reality".

I just figured that the recoil would be different because one is high velocity/small slug and the other is low velocity/large slug. I am helping a woman pick a self defense relvolver for home defense. We have tried many things and she is most proficient and happy with a 4 inch revolver. So, I'm thinking 357 or 45acp. She is shooting my original Colt Trooper loaded with 38s very well, but the 357 cartridge is a little much for her, so I was hoping the 45acp might be a bit more tame for a woman to shoot. I don't particularly care for 38s as defence loads if I can avoid them.

Now you're throwing a monkey into the wrench with the female shooter scenario. :)
I think the full house 357 load recoiled sharper than a defensive 45acp round where it feels like a heavy push.
I have no problem recommending a woman shooter to use +P .38spl rounds if she has problems with .357. Either 158gr. +P or 135gr. +P would do the trick. For anybody, 6 hits with a "lowly" .38 is better than a bunch of misses with .357 or .45.
Another thing to think about, if the shooter (female or male) is of the small frame variety, using a heavy gun like the 625 may not work so well. It's over 40 ounce chunk of steel that the shooter has to manipulate in time of stress. A compromise with slightly lighter gun may get better results.
I shoot better with a 2" model 10 than the 625 Mountain Gun despite the shorter barrel.
Good luck.

She is a big Italian "N Framed" size gal, so the size of the pistol isn't so important. In fact she bought a little j frame 38 and couldn't hit sky with it if she was shooting from a hot air baloon. With a large frame 357 shooting 38s she hits steel silhouettes consistantly at 30 feet. I might just get her to buy a 357 in 4 inch and have her shoot some +p 38s. I've been hoping to get a 45acp revolver to let her try. As much for my own curiosity.

I'm in Montana and 45acp revolvers aren't very practical around here, so finding one to try has proven difficult. She and her husband are professional eco-nazis and anti-gunners, but since her husband travels for work and someone tried to break into her house with her there, she is reconsidering her anti-gun philosophy now that she has experienced a little bit of the real world. I have to admit I'm enjoying watching her learn to love shooting and see the lights go on, if you know what I mean.

So, I'm thinking maybe a used S&W m19 with +p 38s might be the ticket.

Thanks All

I just read my post and am laughing at myself. I don't think I'll ever be able to describe another woman without thinking "is she a J, K, L, N, or X frame sized gal?" It would be easier for us guys to buy them dresses if they came in frame sizes instead of even numbers between 2 and 10. If you ask, "Honey what size are you, an 8 or a 6?" You can get slapped for your ignorance ! Men simply think in frame sizes. I kind of prefer mine in L frame with a plus sized cylinder and roundbutt in stainless and no engraving! Or maybe I've spent too much time this hunting season with my bird dog and need to get out more!

If you told this to your significant other, your bird dog may be the best company that you'll every find.

I'd be willing to bet it would be a lot less risky to ask a woman if she was an X-frame than it would be to ask her if she is a size 20. :D
