Unfortunately, Jack is no longer doing custom revolver work, but he made my day several years ago with this 629-5:

* Hybra Port â„¢ Porting (â„¢ Weigand Combat)
* Complete Action Job
* Turn Barrel and Crown
* Chamfer Cylinder
* Polish Trigger and Add Stop
* Soften Hammer Checkering
* Dehorn for Carry
* Eliminate Cylinder Endshake
* Replace all Springs
* Polish Screw Heads and Pins
* Bead Blast

Can you tell me your opinion on the porting, please.

How much recoil does it reduce?

Or does it just reduce muzzle rise?

How bad is the flash at night? Can you find your front sight for follow up shots?

Loss in velocity?

God Bless

I too wish that Jack was still doing this type of work. I have a special piece that he built for me from a Model 29. The picture below shows it along with its unaltered sibling. In addition to the porting, it received an action job (duh), bobbed hammer, DAO conversion, and polished trigger (it started life as a serrated target model). Later, I had a MagnaTrigger installed and sent it to AP&W for matte hard chrome. It also wears meprolights and is my nightstand gun.

As to the recoil question, it really only helps with PERCEIVED recoil, mainly due to the significant reduction in muzzle flip. It practically recoils DOWN, but the gun still slams back pretty hard. I haven't tried to measure the velocity loss, but someday....

Muzzle flash is mostly a factor of the ammo you choose. I settled on Silvertips due to the very small fireball they generate. YMFMV

Marc Morganti is doing Weigand Hybra Porting. http://www.geminicustoms.com/S&WRevolvers.htm
I have had him do some 1911 work. I do not have any experience with his revolver work.

I can't comment on Weigand's porting but some friends and I conducted a little comparison with S&W 686 revolvers a few years back. The guns:
S&W 686 4 inch, stock.
S&W 686 4 inch, Magnaported (the standard two ports)
S&W 686 4 inch, Performance Center Carry Comp. This is the single port.
Ammo- Federal 125gr .357 mag.
3 experienced shooters (Gunsite, AMU, IPSC, etc)

The short story is both types of porting did what they claim- Magnaporting reduces percieved recoil and allows you to deal with the pounding from magnum rounds. The compensator on the PC gun kept the muzzle down for faster sight reacquisition during follow up shots.
Reduced recoil-Magnaporting.
Reduced muzzle rise-compensators.
Just what we concluded, FWIW.

Gents,
Those are some very nic e wheelguns - it seems like we are slowly losing smiths who can make these six-shooters into materpieces.
