About 20 years ago I had a Python converted to a "Roller Bearing." The gunsmith was Walt Sherman from Florida and YES, I still have it and it is a great smooth revolver. I used it in PPC as well as the beginning of IPSC when we still used stop plates and a stop watch. I have owned that one since 1972. It is the only one that I have had longer than I have been married.

Anyway, my wife is left handed and shoots a Colt Det special three inch or Diamondback for the house and around the ten acres for snakes and such when the 1/2 mile walk to the mail box. There are some medical reasons for the revolver and so another gun is not an option.

I am considering converting my wife's diamondback to a roller bearing.

Does anyone know of a smith who still does the Roller Bearing.

I have tried the Cylinder and Slide folks already

Thanks

Well, I haven't heard that he has retired or passed on, so why don't you try him at:

Sherman Custom Guns
Walter Sherman
5846 Tea Rose Tr., Tallahassee, FL, 32311
850 878 9563

Edit to add:
I don't own one of his guns, but have shot several and I know exactly what you mean about the roller bearing. It is Sweet!! A very light double action without risk of light primer hits.

New here but Walt converted a Python for me several years back and I have been quite happy with mine, too. He also converts S&W K, L, N frames that are pre-MIM. I will just say that somewhere out there is floating around a 625 Mtn. Gun in .45 Colt with one of his roller actions (don't ask). Unlike C&S his roller actions retain the single action. Several years ago he had mentioned he was thinking about Ruger roller action conversions but I don't think he has gone ahead with it.

I recall on another board someone mentioned that there were 3 people doing roller conversions on Pythons but no one could name them. As to D frames I don't know who would do a roller conversion. C&S does offer a "Supertune". Some time back a Det. Sp. with a supertune was written up in a gun mag and I seem to recall a double action around 7.5 pounds. There was an APG member in SC, I believe, that tuned Colts but can't recall the name and don't see him currently listed so he may have passed on.

Cam...thanks for posting that link, checked it out and read for awhile...very interesting. Do you have any of Mr. Cunningham's work to post pictures of? May have to keep him in mind for my next revolver build! (Sorry...wasn't trying to hijack the thread Terry!!! )--John

Not at all. That is what these threads are for. An exchange of information to aid all of us who have a "hankering" for something a bit different.

I got my second Python with the Roller Bearing from refinish a bit ago.

Talk about smooth.

Guys, I am or will be posting a few revolvers in the near future. Nice pieces and also very, very, purposeful.

Thanks again.

If I recall, in the 1990's in American Handgunner there was an article on Walt Sherman's roller actions. It was in the same issue as an article on Pythons by Massad Ayoob.

Terry...please make sure you post a few photos of the young lady's Diamondback when you do those pictures.....gotta love the ol' wheelguns. One day soon I plan on picking up a 2 1/2" Diamondback of my own, maybe have it slicked up by Mr. Cunningham!
