I have a Smith 29-2 with a 6 inch barrel that I would like to reduce in size to 4 inches. I guess the best way to go is find a 4 inch barrel and have it twisted on. Easier said than done, I have checked every place and everyone I can think off but could only find a 4 inch nickled. Am I better off waiting to find a 4 inch or have a the 6 inch shortened?

Buy the nickle 4", and have it stripped by a chrome shop. Or better yet, send it to Smith &
Wesson Performance Center to have the barrel stripped and fitted and the gun tuned up and
reblued. I recently got mine back from them after they stripped my whole gun, and the blue
is like nothing I've ever seen, including the old school guns. I can't say enough about the work
they did or the work Don Williams did before sending it to S&W, the gun is as close to perfection
that I'm ever likely to own.

Marc,
Good idea but Smith and Wesson no longer has any 4 inch barrels left for 29's. What's plann "B"?.

Walt-didn't you say you found a nickled 4" barrel? Buy that one, and send it along.....

Or, even though I didn't have Don shorten my barrel, he did mill in a Novak dovetail
front sight after milling off my original red front ramp. Maybe your barrel could be
lathed off and crowned and a dovetail fitted, if that interests you. I'm very happy with
my clean, crisp sight picture, and the gold bead stands out well.

Saddlemaker, You can shorten the original barrel, but often you're left with grossly off center rollmarks (or a partial one). What I normally do in these instances is remove the original rollmarks and re-engrave the caliber designation on the barrel on-center. I just had to do this with a 6" model 25-5 which the customer wanted shortened to 3 1/2". Also, there may be some good used (or even new) barrels at some of the folks like Jack First or Gun Parts Inc.

That's kinda funny that Don chimed in while I was typing out my post... Hi Don-still diggin'
the 29! You oughta see it with those Spegel full-sized grips! It's almost too purty to shoot!

Don,

About how much would it cost to remove the roll marks on a barrel, cut from 4" to 3" and restake a front sight? I was considering this myself on a S&W model 65 - the 4" are much more prevalent.

Thanks

Andrew
