There is an issue with the steel barrel and the alloy frame. The chrome process is different for the two materials. This would not be a problem on an all steel gun but you are risking cracking the alloy frame if you attempt to remove the barrel. About the best you can do is have a "spray and bake" finish done on the frame and barrel and then hard chrome the cylinder.
I have a complete post on the Model 38 shown below. Ted worked it over when he was the gunny at Gunsite, hence the Raven on the side of the frame. I later had it refinished by my friends at Springfield's Custom Shop. The frame is black Armory Kote and the cylinder and other steel pares are NP3.
