I have found that having carried a 5" 1911 in a Sparks SS IWB holster it tended to feel like the gun was a little long especially when I sat down. Muzzle end of the holster felt like it was pitching me or touching my seat. I suppose it is just my body type and how I wear my belt. Anybody else felt this way, or has anyone else selected another holster design because of a similar reason? (higher ride, more cant, open muzzle design) A 5" gun is pretty big to carry this way and I have been thinking of having a 4.5" gun built because of this.

You might try something that places the weapon a bit higher in the waistband. I'm only 5'6" and I've carried a 5" gun for years without problems. I've had exceptional results with Lou Allessi's PCH, as well as the Sparks #1H. There are other excellent choices out there, but those two are my favorites.

I use an Alessi PCH, Nossar IWB3 or Valvoak and a Garrity Incognito for my Govt models. I can comfortably carry 14-16 hours daily with these and hardly know the gun is there!

I have a SS and an EX from Tony. The EX is much more comfortable and stable than the SS.

Higher than a Summer Special… about the only rig I can think of is Josh Bulman’s PDL, it‘s higher by maybe ½“. Matt DelFatti will also craft you a rig to your spec’s so that may be another option… and I’m sure someone else also makes something but off the top of my head I can’t think of it.

One of the things I’ve always liked about the S/S is the high ride of the gun… it’s about one of the highest riding rigs around… so it may be the case that, even with a “high” riding rig, for you a 5” gun just might not be a doable thing in an IWB. One of the reasons the Commander length gun has a strong following is due to many who feel the common “pinch” or “pushing” while seated with a 5” 1911 in an IWB.

As a final thought, a rig of a completely different design may also be worth a try. Something with a larger holster body may help distribute the pressure of the gun at your side and help alleviate the “pinching” feeling.

Thanks guys, some good ideas here. I think I'm going to stick with a 5" slide for this new build and try out a more stable holster. I'm sure if I call one of the custom holster guys they would be able to fix me right up anyway.

Check with John Ralston, his Uncle Lou is the bomb!!

I have been using his Uncle Lou with a 5", very comfy! John built this for a Dawson railed 5" and I can't say enough good things about it. Fit and finish are first rate, gun disappears with an overshirt. Price and turn around were very reasonable. I'll be buying more from him in the future.

I also am a big fan fo Gary Brommelands work, but he is pretty backed up and tough to get stuff from, his MaxCon V is one of the most comfortable IWB holsters I have ever worn.

Second for Brommeland's MaxCon V, slightly different cant for the Govt's which pulls the muzzle more rearward. Get on his list if you can. If you like your Sparks SS, you might want to check out their VMII, very similar to Brommeland's, but with a reinforced mouth. I much prefer the belt loops fore and aft of the pistol, instead of adding bulk right over the body of the gun. Plus it spreads the weight of a full-sized gun out over a wider portion.

If you can find a good IWB with offset loops and a comfot tab or extention on the bottom...I think yould find it helps.

Garrity, Brommeland and alot of others make them....

Shoot well and god bless
