Here's the scoop. I got a new job a few weeks ago but the building is posted off limits for carrying concealed even if you ahave a license to do so(as in carry and go straight to jail - do not pass go - even for the invasive body cavity search). I prefer to carry, and have been thinking about carrying to work - locking down the 1911 in the car in the secured parking lot - then re-arming after I get back to the car. No way I can carry with my regular IBW in my suit (too snug to wear IBW comfortably  ) So I'm thinking about Miami Vice style under the suit coat.

I have no idea what to do about a gun safe in the car (where what kind etc.....- help is requested.

Jeff,
If you're going to carry in a shoulder rig to and from work it may be cumbersome taking on and off inside the car and attract attention doing so outside the car. Myself and several other holster makers make snap-on/snap-off OWB rigs (usually worn appendix crossdraw for driving).
These are temporary rigs for behind the wheel so the pistol is accessible while driving but easily removable so you can take it off and lock it away holster and all. Feel free to e-mail me at :garritysgunleather@cox.net for photos. As for a locking vault for the trunk, there is a model on the market which has a hand shaped impression on the lid and finger pads where you can set the sequence of activation. My former PD used them mounted outside our jail cells and in the trunks of the detectives cars. They seemed well made. I'll try to find the manufactuer unless someone else chimes in first.

Jeff - Like a number of people here, I didn't win the raffle, but I do very much enjoy the quality of the board and its members. Your query about securing a pistol in your vehicle was enough to draw me from lurking and register so that I could reply.

I keep one of these bolted into the console of my Suburban. They operate on a mechanical Simplex lock - simple, tactile, reliable. You can easily and quickly operate the lock without looking, or without light if necessary.

Until a total biometric solution is feasible and affordable (read my fingerprint, open my safe), these are about the best thing I've found. Worth a look.

Best regards, and good luck in your quest.

Thanks for the input guys.

Pointman - I'm glad to see you came out of hiding and joined in. :D

I'm hoping my luck changes for the better when it comes to winning LTW#2.

Jeff,

I don't have a safe , but that was interesting . I have a suburban too so now I'm thinking... :)

Even though my state has seen fit to screen our record for CCW , like you , my employer forbids guns on company property . They never search us or our cars though. With that being said , my current work location is in a very high crime rate area . You and I both know that opens up numerous heady discussions but let it suffice to say that I am on the midnight shift , I work outside basically and have a partner who might be up to a mile away at any given time . He is on foot . While I wouldn't take the chance of wearing a shoulder holster , or even an IWB in most cases , I feel it's my own responsibility to ensure my ability to defend myself . My life is more important than my job . I wish I had deep pockets so I could sue my employer for not allowing me to protect myself since they will not do it either. I doubt I could win but it would be interesting .

I carry a small gym bag to work with a few manuals , items of clothing etc. If I am so inclined , I wouldn't hesitate to stash a full sized piece in there , but normally I am satisfied to use Lou Alessi's superb ankle holster for my Kahr PM9 . I don't have to worry about some other employee putting his arm around my body and feeling my gun (could happen) or being placed in a position where I needed to open my gym bag . I'm not worried about my immediate supervisor . He carries too . I bought him a holster  , but rather my fellow employees who might not be sympathetic . Lou's ankle holster is my perfect solution...Tom

The car safe that others suggested are great idea when bolted to an out of the way place in your automobile.
For quick on/off holster, like Mr. Garrity suggested, stay away from the shoulder contraption. Check out this Milt Sparks Idaho Quick Mount, very secure and stable, flat profile too.

as far as the safes go and how much room you have.

i went with one of these cause of a reg. cab ranger. only thing that will fit behind the seat.

http://www.deansafe.com/
click on gunsafes. its the v line deskmate.

handgunsafe.com

i think these are about the best. but are kinda big if your looking for something really small.

hope this helps.

remember. even if the safe is bolted/welded down its still can be broken into eventually. basically i wanted it to prevent the "smash and grab" and quick stuff. if someone steals the car they will eventually get the gun. but its better than nothing.....

hope this helps.
