hey guys. im planning on getting a new 5" pretty soon. ive always been thinking about getting a shoulder holster.

not just for a 1911 but for other guns as well. sig 220. hk uspc.

since ive never worn a "proper" rig . i was wondering if guns like

sig 220 and 5" 1911 are too big ? meaning does the butt extend past your chest to far? cause i wont be wearing suit jackets or anything.

or is it better for commander sized guns and smaller (hk uspc ) ect. and 4" 1911's?

oh! and is the same rig compatable with differant gun mag and holster combos?? (from same manuf. of course)

thanks. for the help

Shoulder holsters have there place. They are fine when you would be sitting, such as in a car. I wouldn't recommend a shoulder rig for your primary carry rig though. The weight of your gun/mags tend to make the straps push on your shoulders, which can create discomfort in your upper back, no matter who's rig you are wearing. They don't conceal all that well either, especially with a full size gun, unlike what is shown in movies and on TV. Since the gun is on the weak side of your body, they are slower than a strong side belt rig too.

Most makers make their harness' interchangable with their holsters and accessory pouches, but if you plan on wearing any 2 guns a lot, you are better off just ordering seperate rigs for both guns. You'll start to get tired of changing the holster and mag pouch every time that you want to wear the harness with a different gun.

A full size 1911 is more readily carried in a vertical shoulder holster for most folks, unless you're of Paul Bunyan proportions, in which case you may be able to use a horizontal type.
Shorter 1911s, eg. Commander size, are more capable of being carried adequately concealed in a horizontal rig, but it all depends upon your individual size and shape.

Shoulder rigs have a very definite set of CCW niches, and need be neither uncomfortable nor lacking in reasonable safety as a CCW mechanism.
For any who may be interested in such things, I've written a little monograph on the subject with comparisons of various models of shoulder rigs at http://www.parkcitiestactical.com/shr.htm
