Anyone use an ankle holster for an Officers 1911? Seems like the gun would be too heavy and pull the holster down to top of foot (even a LW version). Any feedback or opinions? Lou -- any opinions? :?

I have one of Lou's rigs that is for my all steel C&S Adventurer. I have carried it a few times and it worked well. I have worn an ankle rig almost every day during my 31 years in law enforcement. The key to ankle carry is that the rig must sit right on top and slightly behind the inside ankle bone. Many people want to mount the holster higher on the leg, then are uncomfortable when it rides down and becomes loose. I carry a Glock 26 all day, every day, in Lou's rig and have no problems at all.

Hope that helps.

Rob

I had one of Lou's for an O-ACP and it worked as well as I could have hoped for with that size and weight of gun. I'm more of a J-frame on the ankle kind of guy but I know that a smartly designed ankle-rig will do just what it's supposed to with an O-ACP.

And not that it needs saying, but another source for first quality ankle rigs is John Ralston. I have seen some that John has made for some big iron and they have worked effortlessly as if they were only toting an air-weight J-frame. One of these days I really will get him to make me one for my 4” N-frames...

I can just see Jason ordering that holster...

John R: You want to carry a 4-inch N-Frame on your ankle !?!

Jason B: Why not? Beats the heck out of toting one in Thunderwear®.

I may be big, old, and slow, but so are the ball rounds in my 1911.

I guess that depends on your perspective, whereas the, um...hang...of an ankle rig is -- How shall we say here? -- decidedly top-down.

Well I'm brave... like N-frame on the ankle and K-frame in the pocket kind of brave... but even I don't go near the Thunderwear.

Poor Jason, even if he WAS brave enough t try the Thunderwear with a 4" N-frame, them short little legs he would STILL be dragging the front sight in the dirt!! --John

I regularly carry a Glock 27 in an Alessi ankle holster with no problem. However, I tried carrying a Detonics .45 in a Desantis rig and it was a bit too much for me. I don't know if it was the holster or the weight that made it uncomfortable.

One option is to carry your 1911 in a holster mounted inside a boot (as opposed to on your ankle wearing regular shoes. You can do this with any boot that has enough height to keep the muzzle above your ankle bone. Just another carry option.

I would think a 1911 in a regular ankle holster (even if you were using a LW frame) would be a bit much. I didn't even like carrying an alloy/titanium J-frame in an ankle holster years ago, and have yet to find an ankle holster that I like for my Kahr PM9.

The Glocks are lighter, but they're also pretty thick guns for something like an ankle holster. JMHO.
