Tooling/Stamping isn't really my thing, but I thought this turned out nice. The whole set is lined with lightly tinted Kangaroo Hide.

Enjoy!

That's a really nice set. What advantages does the Kangaroo offer vs. standard leather?

The Kangaroo is nice and firm and has a smooth grain to it. Some of the French Calf I have used in the past is really soft, and works great for boots, but not the best for holsters. I have used split Cow in the past as well, but I thought I would try the Kangaroo for this project.

If you are hand braiding whips - Kangaroo is the hide of choice due to its elastic properties.

I just got a rig from Mark Garrity that is lined with kangaroo and it is absolutely the slickest stuff I have ever seen in a holster. The draw on the Garrity is similar to an Alessi that I got from Lou over tweny years to give you an idea. It wears very well, looks great and reminds me a bit of shell cordovan in appearence and draw. Just like buttah!!

It would work on the outside as well, but I didn't think the finish was as nice as the cowhide (at least on the piece I had).

I had a customer a couple of years ago who wanted a "fire engine red" shoulder rig for a 4 inch N-frame. I pondered the request and thought that red dye might be a problem both in arriving at the color he wanted and remaining color fast. My search brought me to some Italian Red (how appropriate for me :)) aniline kangaroo. Because of some lighting glare, the color in the photo might look a little pinkish but it was RED as he wanted. The kangaroo is amazingly tough (resists stretching and tearing) for being so ultra thinw I would get a red die to work. Anyhow.....I'm posting a photo in response to jbart's question.

Matt:

A beautiful response to an unusual request (a bright red holster ? Really ?)

I've enjoyed reading the responses from the holster makers regarding the use of different leathers, would like to hear some more comments of the ease or difficulty of working in materials such as shark, ostrich, sting ray, etc. Not looking for a how-to, just some observations from the leathersmith's perspective.

Matt,

That is a much smoother piece than what I found - where did you find such a nice piece?

Jon

Damm Matt, that is pretty classy actually. It doesn't really look bright red and the work is awesome as usual!

Thanks guys! My first question about the request (from a third party) was ," Is the guy a retired Firefighter?" Nope, just liked red.

John:
It's aniline. Did you get matte?

John, Your hard work did not go unnoticed. The new owner of this rig called, and is thrilled with your work. He was leaving to work back east for awhile, but I'm sure you'll be hearing from him
