This old boy's axe need a new piece of hickory on it, so I decided to grind it down a bit to make it a bit lighter/handier while I was at it. After sharpening it to scary sharp (with a couple nice gashes to prove it), I figured I needed a sheath for it before I needed a trip to the emergency room (one of the gashes was a toss up as it was ). I ended up with only one rivet in the construction, and had I had an old post machine I wouldn't have needed that. I gave it a worn oil finish, which turned out pretty cool and won't show scuffs or scratches as easily. The sheath can be carried on a belt, but the axe is a bit over 25", so it really isn't something I would want to carry, but the belt tunnel does make a great lashing point for securing the axe to whatever.

As a guy who uses an axe a fair amount, I can really appreciate that, John-- real nice! My axes are sheathed in some real hillbilly rigs..... but they keep the axes from cutting things they ain't supposed to.

All Dad's axes had doe's leg handles like that one but were double-bit. I always assumed that was the way of the axe world. When I had to replace a handle I searched the world over and could not find such a handle-- he had made them or modified them from handles made for a single-bit. A straight handle on a double-bit is awkward as hell to me.

Very nice job! Just goes to show how versatile you craftsman are!
