Thanks for all of the positive comments and well wishing, they have been helpful. I am already walking 18 blocks (1 week post op) albeit with some pain (no pain no gain). I try to walk 3x daily, but 2x sometimes has to suffice. I can only sit at the computer for a few minutes at a time because it puts a lot of stress on my spine and neck. I also have difficulty using my arms as they had to cut through a lot of muscle to get to the spine. I still am not sure if they did a 5 level fusion T7-T11 as they originally planned or if they did a 7 level fusion from T5-T11 as indicated in my chart. (Each time the doc came in I was in a morphine stupor and the number of fused discs was the last thing on my mind).

My second worst experience was needing a chest x-ray in the hospital. The day after the surgery, I was running a fever of 102 with an elevated pulse, so the internist ordered an X-Ray. At 0200 AM, the X-Ray tech shows up to take the X-ray. He forcibly lifts my torso and tries to wewdge the x-ray cartridge between my incision and the bed. After a few choice expletives, he decides to try something new. He contorts me into a pretzle with the mechanical bed and again tries to shove the cartridge into the non-existant recess between my incision and the bed. In shear agony I weaved a tapestry of expletives that will probably forever float in the hallways of that Catholic hospital. If I could have reached the tech, I would have strangled him. My pain which was worse that at any time after the surgery. Of course I ask the nurse for a pain pill and didnt get it until 0600.

My most disturbing ordeal had to do with when they wheeled me into the operating room. A nice gay man ( he was referring to his husband) identified himself as one of my OR nurses as did another attractive female Hispanice nurse. The male nurse said he would see to all of the pre-op needs. The Dr. Feelgood showed up and said it was time to go to sleep. He mixed a concoction, but was astounded at how much it took to knock me out. He was saying., "I have given him enough to knock out a bull.." when the lights and sounds drifted away.

I awoke 8 1/2 hours later. Thye wheeled me into my room at 10Pm where my wife was waiting for me. The next morning, I had my wife help me get out of bed to help me exerise and then she noticed that they had completely shaved my ass. I asked, why on earthly would they shave my ass for a back surgery... I did have a small incision at the base of my spine where they took donor bone, but why the whole ass. I asked my wife if she thought the male nurse had taken advantage..... she said impossible, with the number of people there. They probably just took compromising pics in the event Work Comp doesnt pay. Image

Man, that makes me hurt just hearing your story John. Take it easy and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

BTW, I understand that a certain nurse from the hospital has volunteered to visit you at home to aid in your recovery (and assist you in your shaving needs!) :D

I wouldn't worry too much about having been taken advantage of. :) It's pretty common for them to shave areas around where they are about to cut into. When my dad had a heart surgery, they shaved his arms, legs, chest, and other important area. All that was done by two nurses that were chatting with each other and not even paying attention to what they were doing.

Best wishes, and get better soon!

John,

I have never really spoke to you and I'm not sure what happened with your back but, I am an old soldier when it comes to major surgery and major pain. Both ordeals are very humbling and test your true make up.

Also as you, I feel blessed to call the folks on this site my friends. I can't build guns or make holsters and I don't know my way around a machine shop but, everyone still makes me feel like I fit in. With what I am going through at the moment that is the greatest gift one can receive.

Lord willing one day I will see Ted's shop and shake his and Lew's hand and let them know how I appreciate it all.

Oh yea from one major surgery survivor to another I had 87 staples to close me up I will be looking forward to your count report.

Gary

John-
Walking 18 blocks! You're a marathonner!
I've probably walked about 18 blocks since my last back surgery- A year ago.

Being in a similar boat regarding back pain, you had me squirming as I read about the X-ray- I could feel it.
But that's what they have the morphine for, right?

Regarding the Butt Shave Incident (BSI), I ASSume no one thought to check Nurse Nellie to see if he had a fresh shave anywhere? No, probably not.
Couldn't resist.

If it helps, just tell yourself they were trying to use the razor as long as it would hold an edge. You know- getting the insurance company's money's worth; since that will probably be a $200 disposable razor once billing finishes with it.

It sounds like you are doing well, and I'm glad to hear it!

Hi John,

Well it looks as though you went and did it. I hope it does the trick for you. I gathered you were waiting for surgery for some time. I have seen many patients do well with major back surgery. It is a long road, just keep putting one foot infront of the other. It will be inspirational to follow your recovery as it sounds like you are not easily kept down for long.

We have not ever met, but seeing your back-side, i some how feel closer
 I look forward to meeting you face to face one day.

Get well soon John,

Jim

Okay, I went to the Doc's today and they removed the dressings. It ends up they used NO STAPLES whatsoever. THye used a million internal sutures that dissolve over time and a bunch of "super glue to hold the incisions together....totally amazing stuff. They were actually shocked at how well I was doing. Here is a crapy pic of the five discs they fused:

Image

Of course this is the thoracic spine only and doesnt show the other three I have fused in the lumbar area.

I am doing great!!! I am currently walking 45 blocks (about 4 -5 miles). I am cutting back significantly on the pain killers, but I haven't reached the point that the Fellow (Junior Surgeon operating under my physician) said that I should be able sustain pain relief with just tylenol (yeah right!!!) I think I am going to be needing the Norco and the muscle relaxers for a few more weeks at least, although I have gone as long as 16 hours without anything. Inititially, I was sleeping great, 4 hours of solid uninterupted sleep, 2 pain pills, and then another 4 hours. No more. I have been taking care of my ill Mother and sleep is at a premium for me. But I am still better off than pre-surgery. I am still very happy with the outcome of my surgery. Steve Bailey and friends met up with me at dinner time on 9/2.... I think they were shocked at how well I was doing. Steve was kind enough to buy me dinner though, he kinda felt sorry for me being a gimp.

John stay with the walking it's about you can for awhile. I had T-6,7,8 fused three years ago. I was out for a year and a half in recovery. They used my rib bone for bone graph material . Didn't have the pleasure of having my ass shaved :o .

Luckily (???) my doc though the risk of using the ribs for the bone grafts were too risky (he actually needed to remove two ribs to gain enough access). So he tried the posterior only fusion, reserving the right to go anterior/posterior depending on how things went. Well, I am very happy with the results. Last time I saw him, he did say that if the fusion didnt fuse properly "It would be no trouble to go ahead and do the anterior/posterior fusion." I am tired of being cut on. I need one more disc fixed in my neck c3-c4, once that is done, hopefully with an artificial disc, I am through with surgeries. The spot just above my ass crack, where they took the bone grafts hurts like hell though. I do have residual leg pain oddly enough from the L3/L4 nerve root. The leg feels like it is on fire at times, and then even the slightest touch gives killing pain....just touching a leg hair hurts like hell. They said that means the nerve is comin back to life.... I think I preferred it dead. Time for my 4 mile walk. Thanks for all of the well wishes and accolades!
