A recent story about U.S. Army Ranger Pat Tillman who died recenly in battle has been on my mind recently. Fortunately many of us here in Arizona got to watch Pat play football at ASU. Then with the Arizona Cardinals. Then he decided life got "too easy" and he joined the Army and then became a Ranger.
The reason this story gets my attention is, several years ago, one of our Deputies stopped a long haired guy walking through a town called Guadalupe carrying a bicycle. Guadalupe is like the movie "Desperado" for lack of a better explanation.
Upon being asked, this long haired fellow, explained that his name was Pat Tillman, he played for the Arizona Cardinals, he was on his way to practice at the field south of Guadalupe, and his bicycle experienced a flat tire on his way to practice. Thus why he was carrying his bike.
From what I understand the Deputy asked him why he rode a bicycle to practice when he made all the money he did. Pat replied, something to the effect of he had just graduated from college (Summa Cum Laude in 3.5 years) and was saving his money for his family, and had always rode a bicycle to school.
I am not a sentimental person, but John Wayne played a hero in the movies.

Steve,

Pat is from San Jose and I've followed his career since high school. How many of us could walk away from his kind of success to serve our country, that is what makes his sacrifice so unique. He plain and simply asked what he could do for his country, and then did it.

RIP
