I'll take a chance and post this here, please move if I'm at fault. I was at the Post office the other day and cashed a couple USPS MO's. The clerk pulled out a big book and started thumbing through it after looking at the numbers on my MO's. She told me that their were counterfiets in circulation. Now I'm noticing people advertising on other boards that they will not accept USPS MO's. I thought these were pretty safe. Anybody have any 1st hand experience or know anything for sure?

Just from an old cop's experiences-

There has always been counterfeit USPS money orders in circulation from time to time. Just as there is always counterfeit currency in circulation. The money orders that you and I, as consumers, purchase from the US post Office are not the counterfeit ones.

Some merchant somewhere has obviously received a bogus mo from a crook, who instead of trying to pass a stolen/forged/counterfeit check, has obtained, from another crook, a fake money order.

I would not hesitate to purchase a USPS mo from the PO and use it with total confidence of its authenticy.

A merchant, on the other hand, has to take due diligence, just as in any other financial transaction.

Just my $.02 worth.

The merchant/seller protects himself by cashing the MO before he turns over or ships the merchandise. Thus, the PO is the entity in risk of being defrauded.

Well, I (obviously) always buy them at the PO, I guess I'll start cashing them there too. Thanks for the replies....
