I happened across this site the other day, and I really like it -
http://anysoldier.com.
Basically, it has about 3000+ soldiers who are deployed listed. They get on and post the things they need or want while over there, from tactical equipment, to toilet paper, to reading material. Since I am working at being a firefighter, I found some deployed Air Force firefighters who wanted magazines, and I sent them all my old Fire & Rescue mags. I also found several troops who asked for gun magazines, so I sent them a whole bunch of gun mags that I had laying around.
It is rough being gone for a year and not being able to shoot say your favorite 1911. Something as simple as having a few new gun mags to read sure does help, and we all have tons of them laying around. I even sent a bunch of catalogs that I got from the SHOT Show, and these were a big hit too.
So if you'd like a way to make a troops life a little more enjoyable while they are in the sand box, go to this site. You can search for whatever it is that you have to donate, and I promise that some troops will have it listed on their want list. I'm out about $30 for shipping, which I figure is one weekend of shooting for me. I think I'll give up a few more weekends and send some more stuff.
