I have lots of suggestions, but the concept needs a bit fleshing out first. In that regard, I'm more than willing to help to make it easier to negotiate through the wilderness.
First, is LTW an actual entity / organization or an informal agreement between and among the various participants?
It doesn't make any difference to the people receiving the donations, but does make a difference to the people donating time, labor, and firearms to the project. There are tax consecquences for donating equipment and "labor" to charity - forgive me for thinking like a lawyer - I am one.
Second, do you only take new handguns for your projects, or would you take a used handgun for reworking? For example, would you take a used Kimber Gold Combat II for your project if I wanted to give you one?
Would you take an estate gift of several firearms, including shotguns, rifles and handguns for the project. Obviously not all guns are good for building the type of projects that I have seen so far. However, nothing should preclude you from taking these gifts and then liquidating them to either buy new guns to use as project starters )
If you pick a charity that is a recognized charity (for example a Children's Hospital), they have people on stafff that can help facilitate the gift, identify families that meet your criteria, and give LTW some nice public recognition for the efforts of your group. Good gun-related PR is hard to come by these days and this is good gun PR - take adavantage of it.
I have lots more where that came from - is this the kind of stuff you want?
