Couple of quick questions....are you using a tripod, if not, go get one for about $20. It'll allow you to shoot at slower speeds using ambient light, reducing harsh shadows and "hotspots".
Does your digicam have the feature whereby you press 1/2 way down on the shutter button and it will "lock" the exposure information for as long as you hold it ? If so, try laying a white sheet of paper over the gun, press and hold the shutter button halfway, then remove the paper and press down fully on the shutter release to take the shot. The camera will calculate the exposure from the ambient light reflected back off of the even white surface which should result in a better more evenly cast picture.
I only have 2 silver guns, but have the same problems shooting some highly polished blued Smiths....
