Does anyone know if Joseph M. Bunczk of Phoenix Armory, PA. is still alive? I recall many years ago he was battling an illness.

Eric...I did a few searches in my spare time today and couldn't find any recent info regarding him or the company. There was mention in one post on Makarov.com that he had gotten out of the gunsmithing business and is doing jewelry only these days, but I have no idea how true the info might be. His address for the company was posted several places, but the accompaniying phone number is no longer in service. Unless one of the great guys here has any other info, you might consider sending him a "snail-mail" to this address: Joe Bunczk , Phoenix Armory, 248 Miami Ave , Norristown, PA 19403

I also did a white page search for all of PA for the last name only and only one name came up (female), I tried to call that number to see if it was a relative, but that number was also out of service, so best of luck to you in your quest!! Best regards--John

Well heck JR, thanks for the searching you did. I've done the same, and had similar results. I recall several old Combat Handguns magazines where writer Walt Rauch did features on Bunczk's guns. Once on his Makarov work if I recall, and another on an interesting S&W 586. Rauch thought highly of his work, and I was curious if he was still around and still smithing.

No problem...us "semi-retired" officers like to run down a lead or two every so often, keep the juices flowing and all!! I also remembered after I started searching for him, about the articles on his Makarov's and began lusting for one back then.. You might check a few of the smiths on here.....I once saw a BEAUTIFUL job that was done on an East German one by one of our biggies, but since he no longer does work on those I will respect his wishes and will not "out" him. (I still wish he would slick up my little CZ-82 in 9x18 though... ). You might consider giving Dave Sams a call here in Virginia, he is listed quite a few times on the forum if you look. He was lead armororer for the AMU and does excellent work on just about anything, as long as the weapon and modifications are safe. Best regards--John
