This weekend I stopped by a shop that had a Gold Cup Delta for sale. I have always wanted a 10mm Colt and was wondering if for a future custom project if it would be worth fooling with the Gold Cup version or if I should just wait it out for a standard configuration.
Thank you in advance fellas.

I would think yes only if you need the Gold Cup roll marks and those sight cuts. And then you are paying for them.

If you're planning on any custom work, the Gold Cup creates more problems than it solves, regardless of caliber. I'd wait for a Delta Elite.

I agree. If you want an adjustable-sight 10mm, you are better off getting a standard Delta and having it cut for Bo-Mars.

I think my post was misconstrued. For a really neat "retro" custom 10mm, that would be perhaps the only choice. Has the sight cut and roll marks to make it. However, if you want a contempory custom gun, then it isnt the "best" choice. You cant argue the stock sights are as good as BoMars. And the other stuff done by Colt will be worth much of anything compared with a smiths work.

I think a custom GCDE would be kinda cool, if one were so inclined. Its just you will pay more for it. If its a good price, why not? There arent that many of them out there. Is it blued or SS? Whats the condition? Could be a neat custom gun.

And remember, you dont have to do all of the custom work at once. Talk with a good smith and tell them what you want out of it. Work on a 1911 is done in a standard progression, follow it piece by piece and you could end up with a nice gun when done, with the GC roll marks. A trigger job, and tightening (and cleaning up the machine marks, etc) of the gun would be my first step. Followed by a barrel (marked in such a way as to look stock), then 30lpi checkering (and 40lpi under the trigger guard and rear of slide). Then have it refinished. Leave the sharp cornors, unless you want to carry it. Swensen type ambi safety. Old style beavertail (Kings?). I would have it built to look like a 30 yr old PPC/Bullseye gun. Outfitted with some Alessi leather. Would justify the higher price to me, I think.

But thats just me, and my tastes are somewhat weird, and I already have a contemory custom gun.

I've got a 70 series Gold Cup that is a shooter, not a collector. I have been rattling around a thought that it would make a nice custom at some time.

What are the issues with a Gold Cup over a standard 1911 that make the Gold Cup a "problem"?

You can build a custom out of a 'Cup, but you have fewer options of what parts can be used and what custom work can be done. You have to work around some of the factory "enhancements" to implement some jobs.

1) The rear sight mounting pin is pretty weak and fails frequently. The main problem is that the factory cut out is so long, front to back, that you either have to a) weld it up, then cut it for whatever you want, b) use a Witchita adjustable or c) use a Wilson adjustable. The welding fix is one that doesn't appeal to me personally, because the are that needs to be filled is pretty large. You can also silver-solder is a piece of steel as a filler. If for example, you wanted a Heinie rear sight on your 1911 and you are building on a 'Cup, you've got to either accept a different rear sight or start doing "work-around" solutions.

2) The front strap is factory serrated at approx. 20 lpi. This limits your choice to 20 lpi checkering or welding in one of EGW's front strap inserts.

3) There are fewer choices of triggers suitable to use in a 'Cup because it's so much wider than a normal 1911. There's not a practical way to convert to the narrower 1911 trigger, should that feel better to you.

John,
is the Wilson sight any account and does anyone make a ''solid'' trigger without holes or anything else cut into it???

The Wilson is a good adjustable sight. It's pretty long (front to back), compared to a Bo-Mar, but that's what it takes to cover the old hole. Personally, I'd rather use one of those on a 'Cup than a Wichita.

King's makes a short, solid trigger for a Gold Cup. That's the only one that comes readily to mind. Casull used to make an aluminum trigger for a 'Cup that had the same lightening cut outs that the Colt trigger did. It looked very nice in the gun.

Good Luck!

Saw a post on 1911 forum recently ...apparently George at EGW has some goldcup triggers that they will configure to specified length and configuration. George made the post BTW.

Also I have a custom goldcup most built by EGW . I have the Kings trigger and Wichita Sights which I really like ...Yes they are big and beefy but the picture is awesome ...IS there a knock on these sights? Mine are melted , low mounted , and don't hang off the back of slide like the Wilson sight does.

For the guy that has the rattler Mine was too...George can weld up the rails and then machine them to fit yor slide...You will be more than pleased with the lasting result. Had althe other usuall stuff done Ed brown grip safty , Egw sear ,disconnector, Koenig hammer. 2.5 lb trigger job, Kart barrel, EGW bushings,( hadan exta made aswell)SA Magwell, Fiber optic front sight.

This gun is a great shooter now much better than I am ...I shoot L-10 with it every week and I am glad to say I have a Colt that can shoot with anything out there 8)

Here's another thing-- I've heard two separate reports of 10mm GC's cracking through the trigger cut. These were probably second hand reports-- Sean, you're much more of a TenHead than I am, maybe you can tell us if this is a known occurrence or urban Ten myth, but it sounds reasonable. The way the wider trigger cut meets the exterior cuts, it makes for sort of a double-whammy notch, a perfect little breeding ground for cracks.

I've really got no idea about that one, I've never heard of it, but it sounds plausible.
