Only maybe a half dozen shops doing Hi Powers these days. Fortunately for me I have been able to handle and photograph two of the best. Don Williams and the Czar of my gun building universe Theo Yost. Ted has been doing this package for some time and just recently we decided to mark these. In my opinion one of the best deals going in custom HP's. Brownings don't often get mentioned in the same conversation with a full house 1911. However, they offer a great deal in terms of being a competent carry gun. Ergonomically Ted thinks and I agree they are a little better than a 1911. Now I need to watch for lightning.

All of us at one time or another have argued the .45 vs. 9mm debate..........to exhaustion. IMO, a good gun, and a trained, knowledgable shooter is really all it takes. The Browning HP is certainly a mainstay in the pistol market and certainly as illustrated below will survive the custom market for years to come. This gun is going to be written up soon in an industry magazine. Wish I had brought the target but our own Ray Harms shot 50 rounds through one ragged hole with this one. Now it may have been at seven yards but they all went throught the same hole. :P :P :P

Anyway here goes.

When my BHP grows up it is gonna look just like this one. 8)
This package has one variation which by request Ted does a trigger reduction modification and of course you can always add Spegel stocks, which for the BHP guys are the best.

It's so purty!

Don and I have talked about doing a Hi-Power, I've just never got around to getting a nice base gun to send to him. Oh well, someday I'll have one.

Steve, beautiful pics of the Brng by Ted. He sure makes great pistols. I wonder if he has ever played with the idea of a trigger stop in the pin hole of the mag safe. I used to take out this pin tap it for a #2 headed screw, turn it in and try the pull, if the head of the screw stops the hammer from falling, turn a few thous from the head and try. It works great and can hardly be seen. Send Ted my best on a really nice job. Im sure happy that I was in on the infancy of customizing Brngs, way back. Austin

You guys are killing me! I am going to stop visiting this site if you keep posting all these pictures. Just when I thought I had satisfied the itch for 1911's you start with the Hi-Powers.

I am lucky enough to have a YoBo HP... it is basicly this package. My brother has one too. We ordered them before this package was available..or at least advertised  Great guns, mine has 1000s of rounds thru it and is carried more often than any other gun. I'd trust my life too it ANYWHERE on the planet! It ia 100% dependable, very accurate and the most shootable handgun I have ever used!!! I think I'll have to order up another as soon as I find a good base gun. :D

Great photography, Steve, and an equally great BHP. Yoda told me that a BHP engraved with SRT was in the works. I need another one like the Pope needs a loose girlfriend, but guess I'll have to ship the Master a BHP Practical, for SRT treatment, to include checkering. At least by having 40 lpi checkering, I can justify another one. Okay, admittedly weak, but I'm just looking for an excuse, any excuse!

I've had custom guns built by just about every major smith over the years, and if there is a better pistolsmith than Ted Yost alive anywhere in the world, his work has escaped me!

Hope you heard that, Ted? I'm not getting any younger, and I'm not ashamed to bribe you in hopes that the commercial plug (which happens to be true, even though I'm somewhat biased) might move my BHP work up a few months on your bench!

Best regards, buddy, and fantastic work, as usual!

Jim

Mmmm. Custom HP. Just waiting for my new one to break in and then I want to get at least trigger and stippling done.

Ok... so I should probably also wait until something else bobbles up to the top of a list and I get /something/ back before adding Yet More Guns at a gunsmith.

Blackstone...while it is out at YoBo, you might as well, get Ted's hammer mods, thumb safety, a set of Heinies, and...ummm...just get the SRT package  You know you want it.

Oh ... I know I /want/ it. I'm just not sure I can afford it. Especially with Steve posting those 1* Commander. How dare he tempt us (me!) so!!

(Actually -- it's one of the Belgian HPs from CDNN and I'm pretty happy with the sights and so on. The 9lb odd trigger has got to go, though, and the mag safety is driving me crazy. Oddly, it has no S/N on the grip like all the rest of the HPs I've seen, so stippling it should (?) be a little simpler -- no border there)

You have not lived unless you shoot one of Ted's BHP with the trigger reduction. This one is as good as almost any 1911 trigger the reset makes you laugh. And he loves doing 'em.

The one ragged hole was actually at 50 ft.

This one is a joy to shoot with the trigger job and the trigger travel reduction.

Even if you love the 1911, you really need to try a BHP that is high cut on the front strap, has the hammer mods for no bite, and the modified thumb safety that we do. Ergonomically, I actually like it better than the 1911. (Like Steve said, should I be ducking because of lightning striking?)

Pardon if this is a stupid question. What exactly is the trigger reduction modification you spoke about?

Oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man.
I love HiPowers.
I really love custom HiPowers.
I really really love Yost HiPowers.

I like the feel of HiPowers over 1911s also, but they are close on my list. They feel different, but near-equally well.

I carried HiPowers for a long time, or alternated between BHPs and 1911s. I thought the BHP trigger reset was overblown. Now I've been carrying 1911s most of the time, and when I shoot a BHP, the trigger drives me crazy.
Gotta look into having one "Yosted".

By the way- I'm not much of a knife guy, but I like Randall model 1s. I always thought it was the fiercest looking knife there was.
That's nice.

Thanks Barry I am a bit of a Randall Geek. The trigger reduction is a modification Ted developed to reduce the travel of the trigger. It is fairly complicated but the return is absolutely worth it. Rob Leatham who lives in our shop tried this one out dry firing and got goofy. And Rob is not the type of guy to get goofy over too many guns. :?

Steve,

Great photos. I will let you know if I can keep 50 rounds in one hole! This is one of three Hi Powers that I'm writing up for Harris. Karl Sokol (Chestnut Mountain Gun Works and Bill Laughridge (C&S) are doing the other two.

I have a feeling that my credit card is going to take a hit on this project.

Rob

Yet another reason the LTW crew HAS to do a HP as a project gun!

This pistol arrived via my FFL dealer on Friday. All I can say is Ted did a great job. I requested a "working man's gun" and that is what this package is.

Will file a complete report after a couple of trips to the range.

Thanks Ted, Steve, and the Gang!

Rob
