Years ago I had a Colt Commander that was built at Pachmayr. Foolishly sold it and have looked for a LW Commander for many years.

Stumbled onto a Colt CCO. Alloy frame that appears to be Commander length except for the gripframe which appears to be Officer's Model dimensions. Stainless slide and Black anodized frame. Good sights of unknown origin. Trigger decent for a Series 80 weapon. Gun in new condition. All it needs is an ambi-safety and I would carry it. I've put a couple of hundred rounds through it without a stutter.

I think I know what the strengths are; what are the weaknesses of this design.? Thanks for your help.

Bronco,

Not in answer to your question, but I just saw a LW Comander Pre 70 series in a local shop. It has been well used, but has no rust etc. It is about $650 let me know I will check to see if it is still there.

Well, the aluminum frame won't stand up to the punishment that steel will. Some people find shooting with the shorter grip awkward. Lighter weight means more recoil. Otherwise, it is about a perfect package... about as small as a 1911 variant should be made in alot of peoples' opinion.

Kip and Sean: Thanks for the replies. I don't have the bucks for the LW Commander or I would have you check the PS for sale details.

Sean: While I find the grip frame small it is also more concealable. I have ordered a set of Black Micarta Officer Model grips to fit on it as the Hogues are great for shooting but I need to install a Ambi Safety as I am left handed. Being left handed in a 1911 world is always at a cost.

My old Commander had 23K rounds of Hardball through it and it was still perkin along when a young Deputy Sheriff had to have it. That older Deputy Sheriff still carries it and won't sell it back.

I wear my Gov't model and the CCO in an IWB year round so I find the BBL and weight on the CCO perfect for me.

Bronco 45

I have a series 80 Colt officers custom by Nowlin. It is one of my favorites. It has MMC sights, Accu-rails Nowlin bull barrel, high cut grip beaver tail and 20 line per inch checkering. Some how it just works for me and I like it better than commander length guns. It is also the first gun I have ever had with the ACCU-Rail man it makes the slide as smooth as can be.

Pictured below (I hope) is a Colt CCO that Master Yost worked his magic on:

The CCO is a great concept. As we speak Master Ted is working his magic on one for me.

TJ What ammo do you fire in that Ofcrs' Model? Interesting Mod to that warhorse.

That Yost CCO is a beautiful piece of weaponry. One of these days when I get my remodeling of my house finished I could see sending my CCO to Mr. Yost for some tuning and finishing.

The CCO concept works for me as I like the Commander length bbl for all around carry.

Recoil is a subjective term re: LWT pistols v steel pistols. When I used to pin shoot, my times with my LTW Colt Commander averaged only 0.30 secs slower than with my all-steel compensated Springfield.
