I have a Colt lightweight commander frame that I just built and have access to a enhanced Essex commander slide that is "new in the box" for a price well under $100. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of Essex slides failing or other QC problems? Thanks for the help in advance.
Walt

Your Colt deserves a good slide. The Essex slides are...well to be polite, unacceptable. You'll get what you pay for, so pay for a nice slide to complement that LW frame. I'd recommend a Caspian barstock slide. You can order it with the correct "old style" Colt serrations, and it'll look pretty darn close to original.

I wouldnt contradict Ted :) I havent seen their (Essex) recent stuff, dont have access to it in the PRK unless someone has already built it and sells it as a PPT but I did pick up an Essex 1911 with a Colt slide awhile back that way and I was not impressed. I would get a Colt slide or a premium slide of some sort. The saying you get what you pay for is definitely true.

You just missed a 1991A1 Commander slide on the 1911 forum for $135 (with sights, but no guts).

Slides show up pretty regularly. Just need to watch the classifieds.
