Ok, any pix and opinions on your favorite top of slide treatment (serrations, stippling, matting, simple bead blasting, ect)? Is this more cosmetic or do you find it to really be effective in reducing glare, ect?

My personal favorite is 30LPI serrations, they do indeed reduce glare, and look good as well, and depending on the way you do it, it'll raise "apparent" front sight height, which for me makes it faster to acquire during a draw...

Other than that, recently at the shop we had one come in that was scaled on top, its not my style really, but it was well executed, looked good, and appears as so it would drastically reduce glare.

Well thats a good question. It comes comes down to two variables in my opinion, cosmetics and function.
As far as cosmetics go its what ever makes the owner happy when he looks at his prize possession.
Function-Once that weapon is presented and your in your stance of choice with sights aligned your not going to be seeing the top of your slide. Or for that matter care if that time comes.
Me, I like to let the artist indulge himself and wait to open the package.

Well, I hope my thread doesn't come across that I'm against top slide treatments! I don't have ANY problem with doing it for artistic (coolness) factor! I have some pistols with them on. Just wondering if they truely are functional or really just cosmetic.

AND, hoping to see some pix of different approaches!

I certainly hope I did come across as insulting. I apologize if I did. I am not against any treatments of the top of slides by any means. I think they are quite beautifull in fact. I just meant that I would only do it for arts sake and not for functionality.

No Al, not at all. I just re-read my comments and just thought I'd clarify that I LIKE them, just wondering of the actual utility of them.

Nice work Tim (as usual). Any opinion on the utility of top treatments in actually reducing glare?

Obviously any treatment that leaves less than a polished finish has to have a hand in glare reduction. How much does it help? Is a blasted matte finish any better or worse than something like the above pics?

Personally, I think that anything past just the basics of a rough matte finished slide top offer more in the way of pride of ownership, artistic expression and interesting aesthetics than any 'really significant' glare reduction.

Just my 02.

And. Man. I just really, really like the look of a serrated topped slide on a 1911. In fact, on almost any pistol.

No idea why, but it's just one of the great touches in my mind.

4 out of 5 of my slides are flattened and serrated but I find myself in complete agreement with what I read from Bill Wilson in his book on the combat pistol to the effect that taste trumps practical benefit here.

I can imagine going with hand matted and French bordered or something else but I wouldn't expect to know the difference in a holster or in a presentation.
