I know these guns used to have a really bad reputation but has that changed since Kahr bought them? I have always been impressed with the Kahr's quality and had hoped that some of that would rub off on the Thompson's.

Mike Detty reviewed them in a recent magaizne article and gave them a favorable review as did Bob Rogers. Any one care to weigh in on their current QC. It would be nice if a company with their lineage could get back to producing high a quality baseline 1911. Not that there is anything wrong with the various milspec's out there.

Hi Badger,
The new Auto Ordnance Customs are far better in quality than the old pre-Kahr guns but not on par with say...Kimber or Springfield. It's the old adage, you get what you pay for. They are cheaper than other manufacturers and the stainless models can be cleaned up pretty easily. As I recall the thumb safety needed some attention and the fit if the lightweight trigger was not accpetable for a factory gun. Both problems were easy to cure. Accuracy of the Custom was surprisingly good. I had both the aluminum frame and stainless frame guns to test. Of the two, I enjoyed shooting the aluminum frame gun more. It's a half pound lighter in weight and would make sense for a down and dirty carry gun. Hope these comments help-Mike Detty

Mike, thanks for replying. I am only really interest in the quailty of the slide and the frame on their Milspec line. It would be nice if there was another affordable option for a base gun. I also like the fact that Kahr is using US made forgings for their slide and frame.

Badger,
The AO 1911 PKZ, the parkerized replica of a standard military pistol, uses a cast frame and slide. At one time I was told that they would be switching to forgings for the slide but I'm not sure if this has happened yet. Compare the price of this gun to another manufacturer (SA) that uses forged frames and slides and your choice will be obvious.
