Several months ago, I was lucky enough to get a commander that Steve Bailey built for the SHOT show. It's got a 1950's vintage slide with a 60's frame. It turned out pretty nice ;), but I managed to find a 1951 commander with an LW suffix. It's pretty rough right now, but it is original, and complete with the Coltwood stocks.

Typical 1950's straight lines :(

A bit of pitting at the rear of the slide...

Some wear on the frontstrap... no deep scratches, just a lot of surface wear.

It's not as pretty as the commander that Steve built, but it has a lot of character, and potential.

Neat find. :D

Now I'm really anxious to get my Commander back from the body shop.

The Old Commanders for general carry are the best. A good friend of mine who fought in Korea and Viet Nam has a LW Commander with a documented 23,000 rds of Hardball through it and its still perkin along.

It's gotten a Bar Sto Bbl over the years and some Kings' sights but the frame still is good.

At this point in time in my life I don't have enough time left to fire 23,000 rds of any type of ammo through whatever weapons system.

Enjoy your LW for my money Colt's best offering in an O model.

Personally, I'd send it to YoBo for some retro fixed sights, a Barsto, reliability package, and leave it at that. No refinish, I like the character it has now, even the grips. Kinda like that old plain Jane Ford sedan with "dog dish" hubcaps and a 427 Side oiler under the hood

Nice pair of commanders. I'd probably leave them the way they are for the most part too. I think the finish wear adds character to the guns. At handgun defense classes, most of the instructors carry guns with lots of worn finish on them. I always thought that that gave character to the gun.
