The Combat Commander is a steel frame.

As to which to buy, it would depend on budget and condition and what you want done.

While I'd prefer the S70, if the particular example needs more basic work then the S80, you may blow your budget cleaning up issues before you even get to your custom stuff.

I also don't believe a S80 trigger is a hindrence. I have my own and have shot enough other S80 pistols to know a good gunsmith can do wonders even with the extra three parts and a spring. :)

Not an answer, but just food for thought.

Series 80 but I'd only bother with a lightweight Commander.

Given a gunsmith I see no reason to avoid the extra safety of a Series 80 - and yes I know of pick one negligent or accidental discharges. That said all my 1911's are old style 5" steel - I'm not negligent myself; well maybe once or if pressed twice.

I know loads of people who insist the steel Commander feels just great in their hands. More power to them. For myself I find guns that remind me of a baseball - they feel right at home in my hands but give me no index of deflection. If it came as an option I'd give all my pistols the hang of a heavy long slide wadcutter gun or maybe a Taurus Raging revolver with the long heavy barrel to get the weight up and out.

I would go with a lightweight Commander for the trade-off in weight savings - but for all steel I don't see any advantage to me for the shorter slide. Then too my dream light weight Commander has to have Accurails (? spelling and trademark?) and steel inserts so for me why bother - admittedly that's purely a matter of taste but I'm too old to wait for a custom gun and then swap it off to wait again so if I ever do buy one it will be my way all the way or from stock.

probably since the commander to me, is all about concealability. i would only go with the lightweight. if your going with the shorter slide, mine as well make it lighter too. :)

Well I was faced with the same choices. I went the 70 Series Combat Commander. The older guns will more than likely bring a premium over the 80 series in years to come. I uesed to have a 70 series Combat Commander and have missed it since trading it.

If you are going to have custom work done, then the purchase boils down the price and features of your base gun purchase. How extensively do you plan to modify you commander?

I am thinking about a 1* elite or a full house. I am already planning a full house on a MKIV 70 Series YoBo. Just thought I may want to give it a brother or sister.
thanks

S70... only because I don't want any built-in safeties in my guns.

You know what, as good as these guys are it really would not make any difference to me. I've had customs with Series 80 and without and I could not tell the difference when it came to firing the gun. I can understand the apprehension towards guns with the dreaded safety mechanisms but I think its more human emotion than anything else.

-----------------------------------------

You did say "custom".

So, if you're looking at customizing a pistol for the 'art' of it all then seriously consider that the Commander style comes up short on both aesthetics and symmetry
.....it's obviously lopsided; a Government model with part of the barrel chopped off.

If you want form and function, symmetry and aesthetics, then my opinion is that you build a CCO style 1911
......because it mimics the Government model on a smaller scale. Therefore, it fills the bill for not only the 'artsy' aficionado, but also the pragmatic, self defense gun toter.
