Howdy
I read somewhere recently that people were putting the 45 Govt size Novak sights on there Hi-Powers b/c they were larger and faster and the best size for a combat sight and that the Novak sights for the Hi=Power were a bit smaller than optimum.

Is the front blade and rear notch larger on the Govt model version in comparison to the Hi-Power on Novak sights?

Any opinions or experience with this?

This is something I usually do on a MK III gun. Novak makes 2 types of Browning sights. The one for the earlier MK I & MK II models looks just like the 1911 version, but slightly smaller. However, he also makes one for the MK III that he designed to fit in the original Browning dovetail. Because of the size and placement of this dovetail, this sight is much smaller, and is designed to be used with the original Browning front sight. Novaks will upon request, use the MK II (early type) sight on the later guns, but it requires a partial filling of the original sight dovetail, either by weld or silver soldering a piece in the original dovetail. Use of the 1911 rear sight solves the problem without filling. Hope this helps,

Here's another pic of a Novak .45 rear on a hardchromed BHP, the original SRT prototype built by Master Yost:

So, does all this mean that the Novaks sights on my MK II are the same size as a 45 Govt model Novak sights?

Oh, yeah great pics! Ted will be doing my Commander hopefully soon!

Fundi, Nope, the Novaks on your MK II are the same profile but just a wee bit smaller than the ones used on the 1911.

In the future could I have the 45 size put on a Hi-Power without it being cosmetically ridiculous and thus enjoy a larger front sight blade and larger rear notch? Or is the size difference negligible?

TYhe notches are the same. The difference in front sight height would only be about .015-.020.
