Here are some snaps of a Colt Commander that was just finished. It was one of the guns that Colt made extra lightening cuts concealed inside the slide. It wears a Yo-Bo rear sight with a Heinie front, a Wilson beavertail, serrated front strap, carry bevel, trigger and reliability work and beveled mag well.

Damn John another beautifully and tastefully executed piece of art. If I ever get my work issues resolved, you are on my list of custom smiths to send one of my few remaining unaltered 1991A1s to. I love it!!!

Dang John. See what happens when Miss M. tied you to your workbench and locked the shop door?
Nice Commander. Is it Lester's?

Mr. Harrison,

Ok, I admit I must have lived a sheltered life to ask this series of questions, but......

1.Where are the lightening cuts?
2. what are they for (slide weight reduction?)
3. Do they affect the durability/ longevity of the gun?
4. How much weight would they eliminate from the gun?
5. A picture for the uninformed?

1. There is a cut on each side of the disconnector rail that runs from almost st the breech face to almost to the rear of the slide. There is also another cut in the inside of the top of the slide from just in front of the top grooves to just behind the front sight pocket.

2. They are for weight reduction.

3. I have heard reports of these slides developing cracks at the breechface, although have heard of none severe enough that it took it out of service.

4. I haven't weighed one, but I doubt it's any more than 2 ounces.

5. Sorry, I didn't take any and have already returned the gun to it's owner.

That is the perfect setup for a carry gun. I have a LW commander done by Ted that is almost identical to that, and a spare waiting for my gun fund to recover. Very well executed pistol!

Mr. Harrison,

Thanks for your response.

Two ounces can be a lot on a LW gun. IMO and experience the weight is more significant towards the handling characteristics of the piece than the actual carrying comfort (although, that of course, would be enhanced as well).

I believe if the cuts can be retrofitted I might just order some up :)
that is of course if they don't cause the slide to die before the aluminum frame does.

Do they affect the longevity of the slide? Only when they're cut the way Colt cuts them. It's like they couldn't have done it more wrong. I've had at least three that were cracked, usually it cracks in a way that it doesn't get "crackeder", but I had a 9mm that cracked in two places such that a whole chunk could eventually have fallen out. It was a pain to fix but fix it I did.

I don't have any pics of this area, but, yes, they crack.

John - what jdberger said - gorgeous polish on the flats.

Simple, unadorned gun - quiet, understated elegance. Very nice work, sir.
