Can anyone tell me if any of the major barrel manufacturers make a 1911 style barrel with polygonal rifling (for lack of a better term)? And if not, why not? From articles I have read about this type of barrel profiling it seems that this is a superior type of rifling, or am I wrong in my assumption? Thanks.

According to Glock, it doesn't work well with lead bullets and that's why they recommend jacketed bullets only. Conventional rifling works with cast and jacketed bullets.

Glock's barrels might not be suitable for lead, but who wants to shoot a Glock anyway  It's got more to do with their tenifer finish than the barrel design, IMO.

Merkel made some polygonal 1911 barrels in the late 90's, when GunSouth was their importer. I used a few in 5" guns, and the accuracy was outstanding, with no leading. Wiley Clapp still has one he shoots frequently. Unfortunately, I don't think they're available any longer, as Merkel has changed importers.

You'd also need to have a reamer pilot ground smaller to fit the tighter bore.

Thanks for the replies - I just posed that question to see if any good barrel manufacturer (Brown, Wilson, Bar-sto, Karn etc) would make them if they were better in accuracy, cleaning etc - why continue with old lands & grooves if a better mouse trap came along?
