Which grip safety do you prefer and why? I've never had a problem with the standard (GI type) grip safety, but am looking at beavertails for a Commander I'm about to get. Is the hump at the bottom really necessary? I look the look of guns without it and since I have a fairly tight grip, do I really need it? How do Wilson, Brown, S&A and McCormick compare?

Hi KevH,
You're entering a territory where there are a bunch of right answers, but only one right answer for you. I personally can use most any beavertail and get along with it. I install Ed Brown style (Brown, Kings, STI, CMC) probably 10:1 compared to Wilson or S&A, as ordered by my customers.
As to the "hump", it depends on your style of grip as to how likely you are to benefit from having the hump. If you shoot with your strong hand thumb on top of the thumb safety, then it's quite likely that you'll benefit from the hump. If you shoot with your thumb down, off of the safety, then it's likely that you won't need it. I'd suggest shooting someone else's gun equipped with each and see what you think.

The issue will become apparent after making a few dozen draws from a holster. If you alwys get a grip that depresses the grip safety, then you've got a combination that works for the shape and size of your hand and the way you grip the gun. If you experience any draws where you didn't get the safety depressed, you should try the hump style and maybe consult with your 'smith about tuning the safety's engagement to make it unblock earlier. Hope this helps!
