I'm expecting a 1911 back from Jim Hoag any day now and wanted to send it out for hardchroming the lower so I have a classic two tone 1911 from one of our classic 1911 builders. I was considering Tripp, APW, or Metaloy and wanted to ask if doing HC on the Kart barrel was a definite no no. Also, is are there any caveats I should be aware of before sending it out?

I had the lower on a Les Baer Custom Carry hard chromed by Virgil Tripp earlier this year, while Cobra Coating the upper for a somewhat more modern two tone finish.

He recommended chroming the barrel so as to avoid what he called "the dreaded three tone gun look, " so that's what I did. Now the barrel hood matches the frame perfectly, and it's a nice looking combination. IIRC, Les uses Kart barrels with his name on the barrel hood. I can't imagine why hard chroming a Kart would be any different than hard chroming another brand, but then again, I'm not a metallurgist, and I didn't stay at Holiday Inn Express last night, either. :D

Hasty hand-held picture shot in late afternoon light below. The finish is flawless, even if that's not evident from the picture.

Ted, Personally I've never had a problem when I've had a barrel hard chromed for myself or customers.

I had an M1991 HC'd by Tripp earlier this year and they recommended plugging the bbl so only the outside was chromed. I figured they know what they're doing so I had it done like that.

I've bought mag springs & followers and magazines from Tripp and they've been top notch. I think the Hoag gun will be going to them when I get it.
