I have heard rumbles that some are better than others, but almost nobody I know has actually owned one>

As far as I know, the following companies make them:

Springfield
Caspian (frames at least)
STI
Wilson
Para Ordinance

Is one particularly better than another?

thank you

Richard

Add Kimber, BUL (and Charles Daly DDA-by BUL).
I have a Kimber Pro Carry Ten II, replaced the MIM(personal preference) and it has not skipped a beat in about a thousand rounds so far.

I've had a couple of Paras and a Les Baer SRP built on a Para frame and it took a lot of "tinkering" to get them to run 100%. The weak link seems to be magazines, some run and some won't.

I had a few SVIs and one STI that I used for IPSC. I prefered the SVI by far, I was sponsed by them so I am partial.

Wolff Springs should solve the problem. It did for me and my Para is 100%.

I have a very early version of the Para P14 Limited and it ran like a top until I put an old style Surefire P610 (?) light on it. Lots of problems. I took it off and it's back to 100%.

Plus 1 on the Para p14-45 Ltd.
Approx 4,000 rounds with no problems.

RichardZ,
I'd have to say that of the brands that you named, they are all on pretty even ground when it comes to being likely to run out of the box and are also on even ground when it comes to making those run that didn't. Not much different from the single stack 1911 field, really.

Were I buying a hi-cap pistol, I'd choose based on the features that the pistol offered.

I have a Para P-14.45 that runs 100% and has for thousands of rounds. I do have Wolff springs throughout... FWIW it was worked over by a smith - action job, new extractor, etc etc. Nothing major - original barrel, bushing, etc and the gun is very accurate and exceptionally reliable.

MOst of the guys I shoot USPSA with run STIs with great success.

Best double-stack 1911 is two single-stack 1911s. :D
