Many have comment on the absence of Caspian aluminum frame, and there have been wonderful pictures of customs built on Colt lightweight frames.

Kimbers and Springfield are acceptable to some of the Smiths.

I don't think I have seen anyone build on the Scandium 1911 - is there some inherant fault, or just no one has gotten around to it?

thank you

Richard

Richard, I've worked on several of the Smith 1911's, and this is just my opinion, but the way S&W builds these guns makes them a bit difficult to do a really nice job on. First, the sights; unless you want Novak 9MM sights, which is what these guns come with, for the time being, you're out of luck. Second, the grip safety. Despite Smiths capabilities, there is a large gap between the grip safety and the frame. As S&W has chosen to use the smaller radius grip safeties (.200"), there's no way to improve this fit on Scandium framed guns, as welding them up and recutting is not an option to my knowledge. The base S&W 1911's I've shot have all been accurate and reliable guns, but unless or until these issues can be addressed, it would be difficult to make a really top drawer custom form one of them. Regards,

The one thing that really bugs me about the smith's (besides the beavertail fit) is the rear sight. When looking at the gun from the side you can see under the rear sight. Every single one that I have looked at has that gap and for some reason it bugs the heck out of me.

badger, Yeah, that's always been the case with Novaks on S&W pistols. Don't know why, except perhaps they think it makes them easier to install on the assembly line.

I have heard that Heinie is now making a set of sights for the SW1911. Knowing how picky Mr. Heinie is, I have to imagine that these sights would correct the gap problem.

Maybe they can hire an employee or two away from Springfield.

I've installed the straight eight night sights on my 1911sc and you can just barely see light under the rear but do have gaps under the front.
