Hello all.

I was recently looking through an old issue of GUNS (July, 2005) and was inspired by
Taffin's evaluation of a Baer custom .38 Super. I have been fantasizing about
"my perfect gun" and was wondering if anyone had ever seen, built, or even heard of a
Commander sized pistol done in .38 Super with a double stack frame. Is this feasable?
I would imagine the magazine availability would be a little scarce but would like to
throw this topic out there for discussion. Thanks, Jim

P.S. For those of you considering having a custom built, may I highly recommend
John Harrison's website for a very comprehensive and well laid out discussion of
the particulars under the "Articles" section. http://www.precisiongunworks.com

It sure is. STI currently makes the VIP which pretty close to what you described and is available in 38 super. It isn't a true commander as it has 3.9 inch barrel.

SV makes a 38 Super in any slide length you want with a huge array of options, it ain't gonna be cheap though. SV can make just about any pistol in any configuration you want and I'm sure quite a few that you haven't heard of.

I believe an example your describing would be by Criag Fantom.

His carry comps were absolutely superb.

I've checked out STI / SV and while they are nice looking pistols, I wont go with the rollmarks. I'd like to go custom with a Caspian Ti frame and stainless slide sans rollmarks, but havent been able to determine if they produce doublestacks. I could always go Para frame and I assume any 9mm double stack frame would be workable. Please correct me if i"m in error.

Please pass along contact info on craig Fantom if you have it. Thanks

If you don't like the STI roll marks just buy the VIP frame from them and marry it with a Caspian slide.

Good luck trying to get your hands on a fantom. Fred Craig came up with the idea, passed it along to the folks at Briley who ultimately decided to stop making them. A couple years ago there was a rumor that Fred was going to start building them again but as recently as a month ago I heard Fred Craig was in Iraq doing contract work.

Caspian offers a HiCap frame in Ti...
http://www.caspianarms.com/html/receivers/highcap.html

most of the fantom guns by Fred Craig were a cut down version..using special mags...not sure where Fred is now..he has been in and out of Iraq doing contract work...

As said..Briley was making the Fantom series for awhile..not sure if they still offer the gun..

easy enough to build a custom using a the compact grip of SV...mags should be availble too..
