I bought a Custom CDP II a while ago to commemorate making it through 8 years of Marine Corps Infantry :D Knowing wha ti know now, I'm not so keen on the front slide serrations and the aluminum frame. The stainless slide also rusts faster than one would think.
What are my options for refinishing the the slide to keep it from rusting? Leave it alone? Use a different protectant (currently using a light coat of FP10)? Also, if I buy a blued or black steel frame from Kimber, would it require a gunsmith to fit the slide to it?

You could have the pistol coated with something like Tripp's CobraCoat or Birdsong's Black-T. Either one will put a good "skin" over everything and will fix your rusting problems. Kimber will not likely sell a frame and it would need to be fitted to the rest of the components. Your front cocking serrations could be milled off in a "High Power" effect by narrowing the whole front of the slide.

Honestly, it sounds like you have enough things that you don't like about the gun, that you might be better off to sell it and start over with a different base.

I've thought of selling it but I doubt I'd get anywhere near what I've put into it. Looking for a semi-custom 1911 that's CA legal for around 1K. No front slide serrations, no external extractor, deadly accurate.

Lebowski, You might check into having the stainless passivated. If you're in California, you might call Marshall @ Techplate in Anaheim (714) 634 9254. I'd ask him if that process will solve your rust problems on the stainless. Best,

Many thanks, Don!

As far as the other suggestions go, I am very tempted by an all steel semi-custom 1911. But, darnit, this Kimber has been good to me. So hard to let go.....
