I'm looking into purchasing a 1911 for my future father-in-law for his birthday next month. He once saw my Kimber Custom CDP II and loved it. Bear in mind the man is a retired full bird Colonel in the Marine Corps and is used to 1911s. Since we live here in California, I'll bet my choices are particulary with my time frame. I was thinking of a Kimber Eclipse (internal extractor) with some custom grips bearing the USMC eagle, globe, and anchor emblem and his name and rank on the slide. I'd also want or do myself a light trigger job, smoothing of the internals, and maybe have a magwell fitted.

Any thoughts/ideas? Wrong gun? Any 'smiths that can turn around a weapon and get it here fairly quickly?

As an aside, I was also a Sgt in the Marines until fairly recently and this guy is one of the few Republicans out here fighting for our rights (City Council of a large city).

I just bought a Smith wesson performance 1911. Love it. I have seen grips with Marine Corps logo on them even in ivory. I think Smith will do engraving as well.

Sounds nice. Real nice.
Some people feel strongly about (for or against) magwells, so I'd feel him out and make sure he likes them before doing that part of it.

Odd: You have me dreaming of future husbands for our daughters now.

I thought I saw that Springfield was doing some special 1911's honoring different branches of the service. While not semi-custom perhaps they'd be appropriate.

Smith does not have a service gun, but you could have them do the engraving
http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/ ... tent=18801

And have some ivory grips put on from

or

Wish Smith and Wesson made an internal extractor gun! Thanks, Bryan, emailing about the ivory grips now.

Alumagrips will do up a real nice set of grips with the Marine Corp eagle, globe and anchor on them. Just give Chris a call at 602-294-2390 or visit their web site at http://www.alumagrips.com I got him to make me a set of tactical grips with the Wilson 188 mag well and the fit and finish are perfect.
