Gents,

I have a LNIB Colt XS Commander that I'm thinking of using as the base gun for some customization. I readily admit to not knowing enough about it to decide if it would be suitable as a starting point or peddle it for something better to start with.

Any coments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Armed, Don't know about everyone here (well, pretty much I guess), but most of us prefer the Colt as a base gun. Seems that most everyone who designs parts for these 1911 type guns uses the Colt as a template if you will. There are some subtle design differences between the brands, and from a historic standpoint, and the slight (or sometimes not so slight) differences we often feel a better outcome will occur with the Colt. Not to take anything away from the other makes from a quality standpoint necessarily, but many parts seem to just fit up better to the original platform. Regards,

Don,

As a frequent reader of this forum, your reputation has preceeded you. In other words 'good enough for me'.

Many thanks for your comments.

I'd think some things about the XS that make it less desireable as the basis for a custom, are the proprietary rear sight cut, which would limit your choices, and the collectibility of the very limited production run of XS pistols.

Rick,

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I can solve the rear sight problem with some Trijicons. As to the collectibility of this XS, the LNIB LW XS commanders I've seen for sale on the internet don't seem to command much of a premium over the XSE model at this point. That's why I am thinking of selling it and starting over with something else.

Regards,

A bit of info here, I tried to put Trijicon inserts in one of the proprietary Colt type sights, and it's a no-go. There simply isn't enough material to accomodate the lamps. Both Novak and Heinie made a sight for this cut, though it's not currently listed in their price lists. I bought a couple of each after finding they still had some around, just to cover my a$$ in case. IMHO humble opinion, the Heinie looks better here, as it's quite close to Dicks standard Slant-Pro design. The Novak for this cut is a bit blocky I think. Best,

Don,

Thanks again for your input.

As to the Trijicons, I was thinking that these might fit:

By the way, do you still have a set of those Heinies?
