Do you want an opinion on general platforms (i.e. Kahr, Glock, Sig, 1911, Hi-Power etc) or you asking about ammo or are you just asking who makes the best 9MM 1911?

Either way there are no right answers. Which platform you choose will depend on the intended use of the gun (i.e summer carry vs nightstand) and your body type (and how that effects concelament). One gun won't work well for all types.

I have a S&W 39-2 and a 70 series colt 1911 in 9mm. Both perform flawless, every time I pull the trigger, they fire. I have no preference with these. The para wart hog in 9mm was just not my type, so it went bye bye.

I'm sorry, I should have said ammo for personal defense. In other words the one best suited for stopping an assailant and that will feed in a BHP. Of cource it will be tested prior to carrying for feeding/ejecting funtion.

Winchester Ranger 127gr +p+, the stuff is supposed to be pretty nasty. (RA9TA). Of course, you should make sure it is reliable in your pistol and you can hit the right spots :)

Actually, the entire Ranger (not the plain SXT) line of ammo is good stuff.

*I'm not sure if +p or +p+ is okay in a HiPower, maybe one of the 'smiths knows for sure.

Interesting question. I've heard both ways on the +p stuff. I've read one author (who is a very respected 'Hi-Power guy') who says +p and +p+ are OK in limited quantities. I've read other's statments that say never to use anything but standard pressure loadings (Bill Laughridge I believe).

As an abundance of caution, I've opted to run only standard pressure stuff.

I'm also interested in recommended SD loads, but only in standard pressure offerings.

I have always been partial to Corbon. They run well in my 1911 and it is a pretty hot round. Thankfully I have never had to use them so I don't know what they would do in the real world.

I have run enough of them through my gun to know that the gun has no problems with them. Once I felt comfortable I stopped shooting them to save un-needed wear and tear on the gun.

Can't go wrong with Cor-Bon's 115gr +P (1,350 fps) JHP's.

So far some good suggestions. Anyone else have a proven round.

124-grain Gold Dot, loaded either by Speer or Black Hills. You don't need it loaded to +P pressures out of a Hi-Power, regular velocity will do just fine. Cor-bon has had spotty quality control at times. Their 115-grain +P tends to fragment and under-penetrate. Cor-bon still pushes the 'energy dump' myth to sell ammo. You need a good bullet that will expand reliably even through heavy clothing, then penetrate deeply enough to get to vital organs even on cross-torso shots.

I don't know how much this relates but I shot some 124gr NATO ball ammo today that was scary accurate and dead on POA. It seemed pretty hot. I would like something that duplicates that.
I also shot some WW SXT 147 gr that shot to the same POA/POI, but it seemed kind puny in comparison. I think it was sub sonic but the heavier bullet raised the POI to the same as the NATO.

This doesn't have much to do with Custom Pistols, so... in MY hi power:

Image

I shoot ProLoad (I understand they aren' available anymore), Winchester SXT, and even Hornady.

Any good ammo will do, if your pistol will eat it, and if you will take the time to run some thru your pistol to find out how reliable it is.

Beautiful gun Mark.
Regarding my question not having to do with custom pistol, where would you have me post the question. I didn't see any catagories for ammo in the index, but then I new.
Just to keep it on topic here's my feeble attempt at a custom.

Well, this place is about custom firearms, not ammo. There are many other places on the internet where you can discuss ammunition.

Shave a bit off of the full length of the back of the hammer. Try about a millimeter's worth. It's what I did on mine and I have a spur hammer ( bobbed ) to boot.

Gunsite Hi Powers have ( or had...do they still make them? ) quite a bit shaved off of the hammer's back.....I started slow, until it ceased to bite and then stopped.

As you can see, I have actually removed very little fron the back of the hammber, it retains much of the normal profile and the good looks but is smooth enough to shoot with one or both hands and a nice firm, "high" hold.

You know, I had wondered about the feasibility of doing just that and in the back of my mind I think I was angling for someone to give me the go ahead. I'm an old 1911 guy but am new to JMB's latest design. Thanks desertmoon.
