For a while now we have been disappointed with the lack of a really nice, quality, and well thought out set of micarta stocks cut in the traditional double diamond pattern. We at the shop have used just about every brand that has been in the market place and, while some have been okay, none has really fit the bill. Most double diamond micarta stocks needed help in a few areas, some fit well on the bushings while others didn’t... some varied in thickness from stock to stock... some had checkering that was “inconsistent” at best... some had edges that were a bit on the rough side... some had misshaped relief cuts for the mag catch... and so on. No doubt there was a need for a truly quality set of micarta stocks that wear the traditional double diamond pattern, and here’s what they look like.:D

Image

What you see here is the newest offering from the Yost-Bonitz shop, double diamond micarta stocks made for us by John at VZ grips.

Image

Most here are well familiar with John’s stocks and to say they are exceptional would be understating things a bit. John has a well thought out approach to manufacturing and the skill to make stocks that look good, last, and are a step above what came before them. And, it’s nice to add that John is a helluva great guy to boot. 8)

These stocks are currently available through the Yost-Bonitz shop and in our opinion they are quite simply the way double diamond micartas should be. In fact we liked them so much they are now the standard item on every 1* pistol we build.

Now available in black for Officers ACP sized guns!

Jason,

It's good to see a good set of checkered Micartas. I've been using the Navidrex as my main type, and while all have fit well, the checkering was fair at best. Do you, by chance, offer them in "Ivory?" I really like Micarta, and while it's nothing close to the real thing, the ivory color and the durability of Micarta make a great combo to me.

Are these stocks affered for sale to individuals as well as on Yo-Bo built guns?

Aside from the fantastic gun, I got to see these grips at the show along with all of John's line. Let me say these grips are truly fantastic. So is the guy that stands behind them.

This is one of those things that you say, "Now why didn't I think of that?" I remember Steve Bailey telling me about the idea many months ago and thinking that it was going to be spectacular. Well, it is even more so!!! Well Done!!

Wow! Sharp eyes, Dogman! I guess it'd be redundant at this point to let you know your gun's finished

Stay safe, we'll see you when you get home.

Hi, Ted. My spidey-senses were tingling:) What a surprise...I was thinking "cool grips" then the serial number kinda jumped out at me. The gun looks fantastic. The grips really finish it off.

Fortunately, this is one of the few forums not blocked by the military firewalls. Now I will have to stare at the pics until December.

Jason...I cant complain. The longer my colt s70 sits in the shop, the more it seems to have added onto it (from the shop and my impulses). Dang I cant wait for the day fedex comes by....

Those look very promising. How does the bottom of the grip feel when shooting, w/a two hand presentation? I ask because it looks like there is no..., is bevel the correct term? I like the feel of grips that have that bottom edge taken care of. Like the stock Kimber Warrior grips have a straight, boxy bottom and is kind of sharp. Just curious.

They do not feel any different to me. I just received mine from Y-B and mounted them on my stainless NRM Series 70 built at Novak's. They fit and look great - the black and stainless combination is very cool.

Red and green now available... 8)

While the black stocks are paper micarta the reds and greens are available in linen micarta and have a bit more aggressive checkering than the paper micarta stocks.

Jason,
What's the difference between linen and paper micarta?

I have the first 2 pairs of black grips and they are WONDERFUL.

Lester,

The Paper is denser than the linen or canvas and alows me to cut a finer / sharper texture into the grip but this is a trade off because even though I can not cut as sharp a patern in the linen or canvas, the material itself is more agressive due to its cotton weave that protrudes through the phenolic resin. I hope this helps. You can read more about it here: http://www.vzgrips.com/materials.html

A Few tid-bits:
* A set of paper grips weighs 4grams more than the Linen or Canvas (with in the same texture)

* Canvas is the strongest of the three followed by Linen, than Paper. Paper is still overkill and I'll replace any set for free if you should ever break a set. ( Just Send Them To Jason, I think I have his cell# around here somewhere  )

* The inventors of Formica (kitchen counter tops) had borrowed so heavily from Micarta technology that the name "Formica" is short for the term "Formerly Micarta" Hmmm... Maybe I should be in the Kitchen renov. business?

In all seriousness, when I was aproached by the YoBo shop for the Double Diamonds, I was a little hesitant. I kinda like to do unique yet funtional textures. But they broke me... ( Damn that Steve B. Guy!) So I had to make them better than anything else out there. The product you see here is what we came up with through some trial and error. I think they are some of the best I made to date. In particular, the black paper. I am able to hand finish these more than the linens and thay just turn out perfect. They have to be! Look at the guns they are resting on.

The black grips on my 1* are the best I've had yet. That says a lot since I've pretty much tried every grip out there and haven't found one that's a 100% to my liking.

Good job John and Steve B. ( )! Just kidding Steve! :P

Just a little FYI... we now have these stocks available in black for Officers ACP sized guns. Same grips as before only now a bit smaller.

Same here, these grips are just right, plenty aggressive and still very comfortable.
