Well, none, other than spending all my money
I visited Ted, Jason and Steve last June, so while in town for business last week I stopped in to say hi. To make a long storey short I left after buying THE 10mm Commander. OH MY GOSH! I still can't believe I own this awesome example of Ted's craftsmanship.
Although I'm no Steve Bailey (who is? ) here are some additional pics of the gun I recieved today. I'd say enjoy it as much as I do, but that would be impossible :P

Looks Like I have a good use for the PCH I picked up a few months ago.

Perfect 25lpi and the stocks look like they grew on the gun.

Here are the "Delta" grips Ted made & I'll use for EDC. Yes, I will use and carry this gun, because that's what Ted made it for.

Well now you have my 10mm Commander, and my son Mark's 9mm/.45 Commander :P I suppose you'll be coming after my daughter's Browning Superposed next

Glad she's in a loving home! Enjoy.

Thanks again Ted, I'm off to the range tomorrow!

That is a great gun. Congrats it needed the appropriate owner. Nice pictures as well.

Well, Bailey does a half decent job of it.... sometimes.....

I'm not deep into 10mm but in my limited experience I've liked HydraShoks best in this caliber because they've been the most or among the most accurate, plus they had less recoil and were less blasty than some others. I suppose that translates into less velocity thansome, but I never 'graphed them.

A mighty fine piece o' work you picked up there.

Ted, I have no problem with you selling personal guns as long it is not to fund something like golf clubs. Funds may be transferred between guns and English cars in either direction but there will be no siphoning towards golf, got it?

Since when did Ted take up golfing? The thought of Ted wearing a Payne Stewart outfit over at ASU Karsten course is rather amusing

Back on topic, that's a smokin' piece!

Those are great pictures of a phenomenal gun. Congrats to the new owner on a great purchase and kudos again to the builder. I never grow tired of seeing 10mm guns.

So you're the lucky buyer?
I liked that one before, and I like it now.
Congrats.

This is why I'm afraid to visit the shop whenever I'm in AZ. I'd have a sensory overload and my head would start smoking.

Beautiful Commander, simply perfect. No other description needed.

I too am really interested on who/where the grips on the #1 pistol came from. They are very nice and I'd like a pair.

Thanks for the compliments. I kinda hated to see this one leave. To answer a few of the questions - the barrel is a Schuemann. It began as a 5" bull with a Clark/para ramp. The grip panels are just something I do on my Signature Grade guns. They're made individually to fit the frame exactly and provide not only a nice look, but they have a feel that's unique since there are no gaps at the edges. Unfortunately, it's not something I can offer as an individual item. There are up to 5 hours in a set, and time just doesn't permit.

Gee Ted, you're making me feel guilty for buying it
A 5 inch bull barrel? Wow, I keep learning more about what it took for you to build this gun. Someday I'd like to sit down over a beer and have you show me all the little (and big) touches you put into this piece.

I didn't make it to the range yet, pesky work keeps interfering. Tomorrow however is the annual Benelli Pumpkin Festival ( Benelli Super 90's vs pumpkins) :D and I'll put some rounds through it then.

And a few with the prototype VZ carbon fiber grips I got from Jason last spring. Photos don't do the detail in the grips justice.

I'm going to dig this one up from the depths. First often, let me say that is an INCREDIBLE Commander right there, absolutely incredible. Now if I may, what type of material and finish is on the grip screws and polished on the slide stop, safety, mainspring housing pin, etc? That electrified blue look is absolutely stellar on a blued gun and I simply ~must~ know what it is! If it's a secret I guess I'll have to call Ted and get myself on the list to find out!

Absolutely beautiful piece!

No Secret, Rob -

It's called nitre blueing. It's one of the "old-time" finishes. My first exposure to it was the sidelock pins and screws on a Joseph Lang game gun I bought some years ago. I immediately fell in love with the look.

It was common on what the English referred to as "Best Guns" - Purdey, Holland & Holland, Thomas Bland, Westley Richards etc. all used nitre blueing.

I felt it was a natural for a "Best Quality" 1911, one that speaks of hand craftsmanship and painstaking detail. I only use it on my Signature Grade guns, and occasionallly provide it as a favor to a fellow smith. It's a rather labor intensive process, requiring immediate immersion after polishing, and close observation while in the bath, as colors actually are established in incremental shades, from straw colors through the spectrum to deep blues and purples. It's not likely to be a finish that shows up on a lot of 1911's. Hopefully just the special ones.

Ted, that is truly incredible! I am quite happy to learn that there are stll some out there preserving techniques from "the old days" (they weren't that long ago, really), and using them to good effect!

I also thank you for the information sir, I certainly had no idea what the process was.

Barry, please don't encourage me.

My girlfriend, land lord, and school's financial aid office would all become terribly depressed. Unfortunately, I can't have those people depressed for a variety of reasons.

Doesn't stop inquiry and contemplation though.
