Somewhat in the background of the shop schedule, I've been rebuilding a bowling pin gun I did in 1991 for a very good friend. He got out of shooting and needed some money, and, reluctantly for both of us, we struck a deal where I'd sell it for him, but it needed some freshening up first. "D" and I shared a lot, I mean a lot of good times shooting pins both at local matches and at Second Chance. We had/have a great bunch of pals although we are now somewhat scattered. All of us will surely burn in hell for the havoc we've wraught on countless pins!

The rebuild included a new barrel. It had cracked just behind the gooseneck of the compensator, so the old BarSto was replaced with a Kart. I made these comps from scratch, starting with a 2" diameter bar of pre-hardened 4140 about 6" long. The first baffle is a piece of 3/32 gage stock, silver-soldered into a slot EDM'd into the comp. The second baffle is screwed in using the spanner in the pic. Per Second Chance rules, pin guns had to be 64 ounces max, and no optics. Most people didn't really push the weight limit, and BoMars were pretty standard for sights.

Had the frame re-chromed by Tripp Research, everything else was reblued by YoBo except the barrel and recoil spring plug, which happened to be handy and crying out for a finish as I was packaging something else to send off for tungsten DLC. With the barrel and comp fitted together, you can see how DLC and bluing are pretty dang close in color. More on DLC coming up, but a guy name Kevin Reed has been writing about it on various forums and is a great source for info on this finish. Kevin is a new friend and I thank him for turning me on to, and facilitating my access to, DLC.

The second pic-- I saw the life-size poster in the theater the other day for new 007 movie Casino Royale. He's striding along all ruggedly handsome with a suppressed PPK and I thought, man, I know no Brit agent would use an American pistol, but..... he should! Anyway-- this and a few other things got me to thinking to thinking of this as the casino gun. All stainless Series 70 Colt, made-from-barstock sights ('cause, I mean, where the hell else am I gonna get stainless sights?), BarSto barrel per customer pref. Grips are some specials from VZ. More pics later, but you can see here how I have made the bottom of the MSH wider. In other words, where usually the locating rail is the widest part and the back of the MSH that shows is narrower, I've made the bottom 3/8 or so go out to that max width. The reason for this is that when I reduce the front-to-back dimension of a 1911 by removing metal from the back of the MSH, I get into that locating rail and its slot in the frame, and it can get a little unsightly. This mod kinda cleans that all up. More on both later, sorry to say it might be several days before I can post more pics though.

I am disheatened that you of all people would shoot defenseless little bowling pins!
I think I will report you to P.E.T.B.P.(People for the ethical treatment of bowling pins!!!!!

Seriously though, fantastic tribute and gun.

Very cool Ned. We can always count on you for something different, albeit flawlessly executed.

His Nedlyness strikes again......... The fact that you were so far ahead of the curve years ago speaks to your work today.

Now you quit that, CT. This gun, in '91, was influenced by your work of the late 80's.

Couple more pics of the old pin getter, which I just wrapped up today. Modified the front sight for a fiber optic rod per the customer's request, likewise added the logo at the last minute, after bluing, making for a nice white-lines-on-black contrast.

Shot a few groups and it sure seems like the barrel went back to clean-like-new easy. In a short, large bore tube like this the tungsten DLC coats the entire inside (the DLCing of rifles barrels isn't there yet; there needs to be a flowing of the gas/tungsten mix which is hard to get in a long, small hole). With the DLC in there I expect this barrel to last a long, long time..... it also appears to aid in cleaning.

The original front sight has just been drilled for a FO rod and the center cut out to give the rod some exposure to ambient light. I painted the cut white thinking it might help the rod pick up another 5%.

This one shows again how close the DLC is to bluing. Just a little lighter..... less of a blackitty-black and more of a really, really dark charcoal grey. I like to put a crosshatch polish on barrel hoods. This Kart barrel is like all Kart barrels I've run across-- shoots like a house afire.

Note the really, really, really low serial number on this Colt

That is a rather snappy looking gun, isn't it? Details, details.

It's number 1 in my book.

I like the DLC coating very, very much! Tough stuff! The rail on my rifle is coated in it. As usual, nice work Ned!
