I've always seen pistols with ports or comps that direct the gases "UP" in various forms, but the muzzle breaks on many tactical rifles now a days have ports or breaks that direct gases to THE SIDE ONLY and claim to have phenomenal recoil reduction and actually reduce muzzle flash for the shooter (not just for concealment from enemy point of view) by venting SIDEWAYS.

Since upward porting on pistols is in most circles a tactical no-no (gases in the face at retention position, muzzle flash, etc.) why haven't we seen a side port comp for pistols? Would this work? I would call this an "H-Comp" for a short name for the Horizontal Comp. Anyone want to make me one to test? Ned or Ted or any other LTW mad scientists?

I'd think the blast would still get you. Instead of coming up into your chin when fired from close retention, it would blaze into your side.

Been there, done that. Nice idea, but the physics of it defeat all efforts to get something for nothing.

Rifle comps work in a different realm than handgun comps. You have four to five times the weaponmass. You have a much larger volume of gas, at a much higher pressure. The lever arm (length of the barrel) on a rifle is positively huge, compared to a handgun.

And, you have two hands on the rifle, at different locations, giving you the shooter much more mechanical advantage.

What a sideport-only comp on a handgun does is dampen the "back" of recoil without doing anything about the "up" of recoil. And it does so only with the high-pressure rounds, like 9mm+P+ and .38 super at Major.

The handgun stills rides up on you. If you try to scavenge all the gases to diminish recoil more (with sideports only) you "stall" the gun. That is, the forward thrust on the barrel retards opening to the point the gun won't run. Now, if someone figures a way, I'd be happy to shoot it and write about it.

But as I said, been there, done that, had the comps to prove it. (Rebuilt for later projects.)

Darn! I also invented the StarWars Missile Defenses System and they say that doesn't work either!
