Hello all,

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, and if I am, just delete this and I'll know. My apologies in advance if that's the case. I figured that since this is the foremost custom gun forum, this would be the best place to ask my question.

I recently bought a custom 1911, and I have no idea who the maker is. It's a 1911 style .45 built by LG&M (?) using an Entrèprise Arms slide and a Colt Series 70 frame. I only know this because it says so on the parts. (I can read, sometimes.) It has a Briley barrel and bushing, a set of PT night sights, a checkered magwell and flat MSH, a slightly over-sized slide stop and thumb safety, beavertail, etc. I'm not conversant enough with the custom world to know who the bits are made by, so if anyone recognizes any of them I'd surely appreciate the info. I talked to the folks at Entrèprise and they don't know anything about this gun.

Thanks in advance, and I want to say although I haven't posted here before, I've been reading and looking at photos of the guns here that keep me up at night. I even started a savings account for some work on a Hi Power I want to get done!

Thanks Gary! I tried them last week, but "the gunsmith is out working the rigs." Sometimes it's hard to catch those oil guys at home. I'll keep trying though, as Lacombe isn't far from where I got the gun.

Thanks again,

Hoot

"Out working the rigs"
Ah, the good old days I spent working in Louisiana for a helicopter company. OK, not good days at all.
They sure had some tasty food, though.

Anyway-
Seven days on and seven off was a really common schedule for a lot of us working in the oil industry down there (which was pretty much everybody).
I'd try him again seven days after you called the first time.
It seemed like most people's schedule changed on weekdays, rather than the weekend. We switched every Thursday.
There were a few people working "14 and 7"- 14 days on and 7 off (shudder), so it may take another week, but they were rather uncommon.

Interesting piece. How does it shoot? I can't begin to imagine why he checkered the magwell other than for the helluvit. The checkers would be a little rough on clothes

Hi Barry, I tried again, and this time the recording (can't leave a message) says they're not taking in guns right now, as they don't have a gunsmith!?! Looks like I'll put them on a once-a-month call back and keep my fingers crossed. Then again, maybe I can find a resturant in Lacombe to try out. Love that Louisiana food!

Hey Bob, it shoots great. I finally got it to the range, and it worked perfectly, and shot better than I can. Fifteen yards, five shots, three touching, and two called flyers an inch off the cloverleaf (I don't see as well as I used to). Fed all the old dump-it-in-the-box ammo I took, and never stopped. One fail to feed with an old (really old) Wilson mag (that I've had problems with in my Gold Cup, maybe I need a new spring). I've heard so many bad things about the CMC mags that I was wondering why this gun came with two ten-rounders. No wonder no more, they worked just fine. As this is destined to be a house gun, they can stick out the bottom all they want. :-) I dunno about the checkering on the magwell, your explanation is as good as any. It's not a sharp checkering though, kinda rounded points, so I don't think it would tear up anything too much.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Hoot

Glad it shoots well. As far as mags are concerned, I have always gotten great service out of McCormick mags and had difficulties more often with Wilsons. I have a full-ramp Clark barrel in a custom Delta Elite that pukes on Wilsons and runs like a top with CMCs. After running a few hundred thousand rounds through various 1911s, I have concluded the gun has more to do with which mags work best than the mag itself (assuming the mags are in good condition). Mags that get really hard competition use get lip spread and springs may need to be replaced after 10 years. Other than those issues, I use whatever works.

Enjoy shooting that gun and be safe, :)

Thanks Bob, and I think you're right. My limited 1911 experience is that it's the gun/mag combination that is most important. I'm not very familiar with 1911 mags though, as I'm mostly a BHP guy. Seems that most HP's run fine with either Belgian or Italian mags, and pretty much don't like anything else, at least in my experience.

The best news is, the mystery is solved. I got an email from the owner and 'smith at Lacombe Gunsmith and Machine, and it is indeed one of their products. Better yet, it was a special build.

"Hey Hoot, we built the gun back in 2000, Myself and James Miller. James was a Machinist working in the shop at the time and the weapon was his personal. The sights if they're the same are Millets. Cheers, Clint" (Clinton J. Wright)

Thanks to everyone that replied. I really appreciate the help, and hope this has been as much fun (or at least a little entertaining) for you as it has for me.

Wishing everyone a better New Year than last, but not as good as next.

Hoot

The thing about 1911 mags is if they're made in the USA they're probably made by Metalform in Connecticut. The followers for Colt, Springfield, Kimber, Baer, Brown and McCormick are a bit different as are the bases but the tubes are Metalform.
