Is replacing the extractor something that should be considered regular "owner maintenance" that all owners should be capable of doing themselves or is this considered "armorer/gunsmith maintenance" that should only be attempted by the armorer/gunsmith or a "properly" trained owner? (I can do it on my duty rifle, but I know how single action autos need more experienced tweaking/fitting sometimes) My carry gun is a P-35 so I don't want to screw it up.

Otherwise, is this something I should be doing for myself as a responsible/competent gunowner and I should be capable of doing with 100% confidence so as not to bother LTW gunsmiths with piddly work or should I do what I normally do and let my VISA do my gunsmithing?

if your p-35 is a current gun with the external extractor, you'll most likely never need to replace it.

Its just that I had the extractor skip off a rim of my carry ammo the other day and fail to extract. I carry Win Ranger T 147gr RA9T. I've shot 1000s of rounds and thought maybe it should be replaced as part of periodic maintenance just like springs.

The slide is going to an LTW smith Monday for new sights and I was wondering if I should ask to have the extractor replaced/tweaked or learn how to do it myself. I prefer to let the pros do gunsmithing, but I believe in being competent to do routine maintenance myself. I'm amazed at how many people don't know how to change a tire if you know what I mean.

I think it's fine for the dedicated P35-ist to remove and maintain his extractor. Might as well put a new spring in while you're there, Brownell's has them.

You might just find a chunk of brass in there or something that caused the problem.

Their springs do get "tired". It's a small spring with a big job.
But they usually have to get pretty weak before causing a problem.
Like Ned said, they do gather brass chips and other crud also.

You may find a build up of powder residue under the extractors "stop pad" as well. If this happens, the extractor won't be able to pivot in as far as it should, leading to failures to extract. Removing the extractor is easy, but you have to remove the sear lever in order to access the extractor pin.
