I think one of the greatest things that I’m continually learning from Ted is how to “fix” things on guns. Whether it be correcting goofy geometry or making imperfect cosmetics “perfect”, watching Ted make things that once looked impossible “possible” is, for me, one of the constant joys around the shop. And it was with that in mind that I set forth to build this gun.

Image

This gun had gone through the normal waiting list at the shop while the owner was overseas doing the good work of the country. Now it was his time at the bench and, by itself, what he had in mind for the conversion wasn’t out of the ordinary or unreasonably difficult. A functional 9x23 with all the full-house flair was what he wanted. Something with hand-cut 40lpi checkering front and rear, a buried Bo-Mar, S&A mag-well, great trigger, useable safeties, and all the rest that goes into building a Best Grade gun like straightened frame and slide lines, flattened and serrated slide top, and a bordered slide. However, this gun was a fitting example of a 70 Series Colt complete with all the crooked lines, wavy front straps, and less-than-flat slide flats that have become renowned as past era Colt cosmetic “standards”. :?

The customer knew what he wanted and had waited a good while to get it but even Ted’s skeptical eye had me a bit worried. So never being one to know when to quit I started my regiment of filing, banging, cutting, grinding and “fixing” and here’s what I came up with... :D

Very nice blaster, and I love the 9X23. What type barrel did you use in the gun?

I love the flats on the beavertail. Another beautiful pistol Jason.

That's hot. The 9X23 is such a neat and versatile caliber. I have a 9MM Caspian that I am toying with having a second barrel in 9X23 fit to the gun. As usual you guys at YoBo do really nice work.

Very, very nice! I love the crowned barrel and the polished bushing. Also really like the serrations on the bottom of the slide stop lever. The checkering looks absolutely perfect.

You guys sure make like hard on the working stiff!

Nicely executed! How can I get my hands on a slide lock like that?

OUTSTANDING in every detail!
I love the high polished bushing and crown.
Mind if I 'borrow' that on my next build?
:D

When I look at this the word "perfect" comes to mind. The owner will be VERY happy!

Very nice work Jason, it looks like the old classic with a touch of new......

Jason, Can you take a custom gun with a compensated barrel and cut the barrel and crown it to get the same look or would you have to start with a new barrel?

Great job, you indeed "fixed" it. Can't imagine doing 40lpi checkering on a frontstrap, this whole pistol is impressive.

Great work Jason! That high polished bushing and crowned barrel look fantastic against the blued finish! I think I may have to "borrow" that for my next piece as well :)

If I can repeat what has been said already, this one is excellent. It is a great joy for me to sit and stare at my monitor, and see how Jason's work gets better, and better, and better, and ... Makes me realize how far I have yet to develop...

Wonderful job Jason, and I'll stay tuned for your next!

Exceptional in every detail. The thick bushing and deep crown in high polish is awesome. Thanks for making me smile!

I really wish the 9x23 was more popular as a defensive round. I bet if Jason keeps posting pics of 9x23s he builds we will see a few more out there.
