John Harrison built this Colt LW Commander for me about two years ago. It's been my favorite carry 1911, a big improvement over the stock piece that I bought used from a guy on another forum. Gone were the razor sharp edges, the Wilson beavertail improved the handling and comfort, the trigger set at my request of 4.5 lbs, the mainspring housing received the round butted treatment that John does so well. John replaced the itty bitty Colt sights with the Yost Bonitz Retro rear and his own gold bead front sight. I'm sold on the gold bead, I can pick it up from dawn til dusk in most lighting condition. A reliability job and replacement of all internal parts.
This gun shoots great. I have ZERO malfunction with my own handloaded ammo and various factory rounds. It shoots straight when I do my job correctly.
But it's missing something :)
I have Crimson Trace lasers on my Beretta and my daily back up gun S&W 642. I've been shooting them for at least 3 years with the laser and in low light to total darkness, it's like cheating ! Every 642 sold should have a Crimson Trace on it, period. But that's another story.
I stumbled on a great deal on this pair of slightly used CT-401 with the front activation button, and I didn't let it slip from me. The slim line wrap around front strap is easily and positively engaged during normal grip. It's comfortable and doesn't alter my grip.
Now the package is complete, a gun that serves as my protector 24 hrs. round the clock.
Thanks John and Crimson Trace.

That's a great carry piece RT. A little smaller and lighter and all business! I like the YB Retro rear sight with the gold bead a lot too. It does make a fast and nice sight picture.

I too am becoming a big gold bead fan. I just had a SDM gold bead put on one of my 1911's, and it is almost like cheating when shooting at speed.

You have a great LW commander there.

RT,

Very nice, all business Commander. Everything RT needs and nothing he does not.

I do have one question: How does the laser grip compare in feel to micarta grip panels or to Pachmayr grip panels?

Okay, another question: What kind of battery life do you get with the CT laser?

Thanks everyone for the compliments.

The tan part of the grips are hard plastic, it has similar feel to micarta. The black part is more rubbery and feel similar to Pachmayr, but not as soft. The black rubbery more flexible section is required for the obvious reason that it wraps around and make the connection to the other grip panel, and it contains the activator.

CT said that the battery can last as long as 4 years. I've had the Beretta gris the longest, over 3 years. I've used it in night portion of half a dozen classes, plus many practice sessions. The laser is still glowing bright.
